You can't reach much past a 6 foot wide table.

20ft in my scale is 6000m typicaly battle ranges are 500 to 1500m so putting that much terrain on the table at any one time seems uneccessaty, in addition as has been said its impractical to move figures in the center of the table. Using moving ploles like a WW2 Aircraft status board would mean the terrain was massively artificial and so detract utterly from the point of a large area of terrain.

We do play on a virtual 16 ft by 6ft table for our long games, but even then we may not "populate" all of the current actual (8ft by 6ft) table as in the real world the rest would not show up much in the real world, for most of it would be still identifieable only on the map as it would be hidden from view.
