Looking again at the photos it's hard to imagine that anyone in their right mind would sail a fleet up there trying to avoid the shore, hostile forts, fight a battle then expect to get away. I wonder if the river was much wider back then?

Not to my knowledge. Examination of the maps show much the same configuration. If anything, channels may have been a little narrower and shallower here and there. The dock basin follows the old route of St Mary's Creek. This was dug out and industrialized in Victorian pre-Victorian times connecting the Gillingham Reach to the Upnor Reach. You can see it clearly in the aerial shots.
