A Farewell to Arms was originally set in WWI Italy. Are you thinking of For Whom the Bell Tolls, which was also made into a film starring Gary Cooper?

"All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930) still my go to WW I movie with a soft spot for "Journey's End".

Wish we could see a modern Verdun, Somme, or St Mihiel movie. Don't think it's ever been done.
