I have long eyed off this little sub genre and i think i would like to have a crack. Can anyone recommend a set of rules and minis for the weird?

You might try Combat Patrol(TM): WWII. See bucksurdu.com/combatpatrol/. Greg Priebe is working on a weird war supplement that will be figure manufacturer agnostic.

a couple of different rules sets – Konflickt 47 from Warlord and Secrets of the Third Reich from Westwind. Both have appropriate figure lines as well. The lines are 25mm. Dust Tactics is a third set. I use the Dust walkers with 25mm infantry from a variety of manufacturers. Regular WW2 figures can be mixed in with the "weird" figs.

If you want 15mm, the vehicles are tougher to find. Some parts of the All Quiet on the Martian front British line can be used for ww2.

For 15mm, take a look at Gear Krieg from Dream Pod 9. They have both rules and miniatures.

Read through Konflickt 47 but not played it – seems okay and has the advantage of being related to Bolt Action which has pretty good player pool. The Warlord mini's in my lead/plastic mountain look nice.

You can always convert for 15mm and there is plenty of 15mm stuff kicking around 2nd hand for cheap – people off loading old FOW armies.
