In RPGs I used to have a set of "by category" critical technology failure charts. Categories were tierd and included things like "volatile energy device" (which could be many things in different milieu), "rube goldberg device" (any advanced mechanical or jury-rigged things), "transportation provider", "information device", etc. For wargames, mostly the milieu dictates that something that fails just doesn't work. |

The critical failure (roll 20 on d20) rules tends to create these kinds of situations in GASLIGHT. |

In Dystopian wars 2.5, some ships have energy sheilds. A few of those ships also have Inventive Scientists, who can reroll a failed shield roll; If they get a 1, something catchs fire. And some ships have advanced energy weapons, which on rolls of 1, will explode in all sorts of ways. . . |
