Since CovidCorona is keeping us all off the streets I thought I'd try and divert my fellow gamers from rolling news hysteria and panic mongering with some small scale ship action in the Caribbean. I'm looking on the bright side – I am not travelling for work and every night I can move my gaming projects on :) Happy days!

Detailed rules explanation of the 40 minute game here:

Did you hand paint those skull & crossbones flags…?!?!?!

David O Brien15 Mar 2020 4:36 p.m. PST

Great action report Barry and I love the harbour.

jocknroll15 Mar 2020 4:45 p.m. PST

YA yes I did hand paint them. I hand paint all of my flags in every scale. They are done on aluminium foil.

Thanks Dave, you can blockade that harbour at some point when I sent your Jacobites across the Ocean to the Caribbean :)

I really can't express just how great that looks. This is as good as it gets.

Very very cool!

Thank you Gentlemen. A little chunk of land in the middle of the blue sea always makes a difference to the look of a game.

I have run the game a second time, this time using GWC ships against the privateer. I'll post those pictures and a link on this thread.
I'll give it a third go against the French from Martinique tonight.

As promised the Dutch GWC has a go….

Before you started posting about this project, it never occurred to me to game the naval side of the late 17th century nor to use 1/2400 scale sailing ships. Now, I can hardly resist.

jocknroll16 Mar 2020 3:47 p.m. PST

Resistance is futile Big Red :)

Great looking games and miniatures, Barry! Thanks for some insight in how the rules are coming along, too.

Thanks John. You should have the playtest copy now. Have a look at your mail.

The third and final round against the French produced the longest, most brutal and exciting game of the trilogy. Some pictures here above and a link to the full AAR here

Hand painted flags on aluminum foil? Steady hands and amazing patience. And skill, obviously.

I'll stick to camouflage.

jocknroll20 Mar 2020 1:12 p.m. PST

Practice and patience – a great combination for wargaming and painting. Getting the tiny slivers of aluminium foil to stick to the fibre strand is sometimes the hardest part.

Cool pics and report! 😎😎😎😎

I'm not sure what I like more, the amazingly dinky ship minis, or that amazing island scenary! 😀😀

What size do those ship minis come out at physically?

jocknroll23 Mar 2020 10:23 a.m. PST

The largest are about 1 inch long and the smallest circa 4/10 of one inch. In other words… pretty small.

trynda170123 Mar 2020 12:49 p.m. PST

I thought that they might be that tiny. Again, amazing work, sir! 😎😎😎😎

jocknroll23 Mar 2020 2:30 p.m. PST

Appreciated trynda1701. I have taken this playtest of 3 on 1 to the next stage by reversing the roles and giving the pirates 3 ships against the forces of righteousness with a single blinged up vessel. Also moved it to an open water start.
Interesting results.. I'll probably stick them on this thread.

jocknroll25 Mar 2020 5:01 a.m. PST

Moved to the open water and reversed the roles with the pirates having three ships and the powers or righteousness one.

@jocknroll – awesome AAR!

I admit, your blog is by far one of my favorites to view! I have 40-something ADW ships from Tumbling Dice and your beautiful ships inspired me to finally get them painted up.

I, also, choose not to use their pre-sculpted bases and mount them on my own MDF bases. I was wondering, how do you remove your unrated vessels (i.e. the hoekers, crommstevens, etc) from their molded-in bases?

Thanks!

Asteroid X25 Mar 2020 11:54 p.m. PST

The water and scenery look awesome!

This wouldn't take much room at all. That's great.

(Loved the thread intro, too! So accurate!)

jocknroll26 Mar 2020 8:21 a.m. PST

Jake R, thanks for the warm praise. Appreciated.

In response to your question. I experimented with the removal of the bases from the smaller craft wherein they are integral.

The metal is tougher than normal miniature alloy material and does not yield easily to blades. Filing takes a very long time and leads to distorted models and shredded fingers.

I Have succeeeded in removing bases on a 50% success rate which resulted in the loss of too many damaged pieces.

I resorted to leaving them as is, gluing the model to the base and sculpting plaster up to and over the cast base. If done properly and blended/painted well, this works perfectly.
The sea level may appear just a little higher but that is only visible at ground level

Take a closer look at the caravel in the picture below and you'll see what I mean:

I'd recommend this is the way to go. Use an old brush, dampen it and use it to tease the wet plaster up to the edge of the metal cast base. You may have to go back and fill a little after it dries as it contracts away from the base sometimes as it sets.
