Things have moved on with the likelihood of all Premier league games/sporting events being cancelled. There seems little news from Warlords . Clarity would be helpful . Would common sense say that we have no choice but to cancel? |
IUsedToBeSomeone | 13 Mar 2020 2:02 a.m. PST |
Warlords have put out a statement a while back saying there is no intention to cancel and that they will only cancel if Excel cancel the event. Not sure what else you want them to say… |
BobGrognard | 13 Mar 2020 2:03 a.m. PST |
I do agree. It seems highly irresponsible to go ahead. Having says that, I'd imagine that if they cancel they'll lose their money, whereas if the government cancels all events they'll be covered. I presume they are waiting out as a result. |
Royal Marine | 13 Mar 2020 3:17 a.m. PST |
Wargamers will self-isolate straight after the show anyway, one day outside the house will be enough for most of the attendees who will no doubt have plenty to paint and play with for a few weeks ;-) |
Andoreth | 13 Mar 2020 3:40 a.m. PST |
On the ExCel website it says that all planned events are going ahead at present. The Warlords might want to ask ExCel why Salute 2020 is not on their calendar of events. |
Captain Bob | 13 Mar 2020 3:50 a.m. PST |
A couple of members of our club trade at Salute and they have had an email from the organisers saying that the event will go ahead unless cancelled by Excel themselves. The email also confirmed that if the show is cancelled for any reason the traders won't get any refund at all. For the organisers not to be insured and expect the traders, that make the show worthwhile visiting, pay is shocking to me. Is this passing the buck or is it usual? |
Terry Naylor | 13 Mar 2020 4:01 a.m. PST |
A large group of friends who come down from East Yorkshire have decided to knock it on the head. 2 are over 60 and one is a diabetic. If it does go ahead l would imagine footfall will be 50% down. |
20thmaine | 13 Mar 2020 6:09 a.m. PST |
Quite likely the usually large-ish French and Italian contingents won't be coming either. |
dwight shrute | 13 Mar 2020 7:06 a.m. PST |
I expect the footfall to be down due to self isolation , few intl visitors – Waterloo station and the commute into town has been ALOT quieter this week … experts saying covid will peak mid May- June . |
martin goddard | 13 Mar 2020 8:01 a.m. PST |
Capt. Bob makes a good point. Thank you. I had not noticed that. I do not think they could legally refuse to return monies taken for a service not provided. Sounds like the "if you don't receive the parcel it is your own fault" used by some traders. Always worth a try from their point of view I suppose? Maybe they can claim "act of god/force majeur"; but they would be vigorously pursued for money I think. martin

IUsedToBeSomeone | 13 Mar 2020 8:22 a.m. PST |
Martin, I am not sure – the contract with Salute states that there are no refunds for trade stands. The people who have bought tickets will be covered by consumer law, but the traders won't be… Mike |
Terry Naylor | 13 Mar 2020 8:35 a.m. PST |
To compensate traders could not they provide Free stands for the following year as gesture of good will. Understandably there are many other expenses but that would help somewhat. Another point if it goes a head will the display/participation games attend. A good mate runs a display game but is 90% they won't be going. If this happens will the show be actually worth attending under these exceptional circumstances. |
Old Wolfman | 13 Mar 2020 9:32 a.m. PST |
I know I'd sorely miss watching EPL too,Terry. Hope the FA can come up with a good solution, especially with promotions/relegations,etc.. |
Terry Naylor | 13 Mar 2020 10:13 a.m. PST |
London Marathon cancelled . Woodman , I will miss the footie but being honest , Spurs have been so negative , boring , a car crash under dinosaur Mourinho it's not such a personal lost. |
dwight shrute | 13 Mar 2020 12:26 p.m. PST |
EXCEL have a dance event on this weekend , thats just been cancelled … |
Timmo uk | 13 Mar 2020 1:44 p.m. PST |
As has the London Bike show at the end of March. I suspect these have been cancelled by the organisers rather than ExCel. |
cavalry47 | 13 Mar 2020 1:54 p.m. PST |
Have all the moaners stopped to think how much it cost to hire Excel? And Like any event unless it is cancelled by Public Health England The SLW would be wiped out. It is your choice if you attend but the Traders have contacted to attend and if they don't and did not pay for what they agreed they would leave SLW with a very expensive bill. Until it is called off by Excel on the Governments advice YOU can decide not to attend but stop speculating and giving your ill informed 2pence worth. I am sure that SLW and the Traders are hoping that the govt pulls the plug but until they do they must plan for it to ahead Personally I would welcome the extra space and chance to not be near some Wargamers' BO |
Timmo uk | 13 Mar 2020 3:50 p.m. PST |
News has just broken of all UK mass gatherings, of over 500 people, have been banned from next weekend |
20thmaine | 13 Mar 2020 7:09 p.m. PST |
Moaners? It's a legitimate question – some people travel quite a distance for Salute, we're talking air fares, hotel bills, etc as well as the actual costs of Salute itself. Does look as if there's about to be a U-turn on the government advice, following Scotland's lead, to ban large events. |

gunnerphil | 14 Mar 2020 1:15 a.m. PST |
Terry I think he meant the moaners who expect SLW to take a massive hit and give free entry to traders next year. SLW are a club not a company, from what I gather no huge profit for them. I also can see that bearing the costs for the traders will be a hardship. |
IUsedToBeSomeone | 14 Mar 2020 1:25 a.m. PST |
Actually, I believe that Salute is run by a separate limited company from SLW for these very reasons… |
gunnerphil | 14 Mar 2020 2:38 a.m. PST |
Black Hat as a customer I can see both sides. The vast majority of wargames companies can not afford the not the hot either. I hope if it does go ahead people buy lots of stuff. Why it is almost a patriotic duty. Spend money to move the economy on. Well that will be my excuse. |
Marc the plastics fan | 14 Mar 2020 3:31 a.m. PST |
Sorry guys, it's not moaning, it is reality. If the show is cancelled I will be interested to see on what basis the stall holders are not entitled to a refund But with the footie and public gatherings going, I cannot see this lasting. And as people have said, travel will be so restricted that a lot of people will not be able to attend anyway Shame, but this is a global issue, bigger than one show |
GildasFacit | 14 Mar 2020 3:41 a.m. PST |
Timmo UK – that is wrong. The news item quoted a 'government source' and it has not been officially confirmed. The line continues to be that it is a 'developing situation' and nothing is decided as yet. I can see the logic of stopping large events but there has to be some sort of compensation or support for small organisations that have to do that at short notice. Not everyone that has to cancel will be a premier league football club. Closing schools is not a good idea. How many health professionals, police & other essential workers will have to stay at home to look after their kids when they are needed at work ? Use some joined-up thinking, not knee-jerk reactions. |
legatushedlius | 14 Mar 2020 8:50 a.m. PST |
I won't be going, sadly. I'm over sixty, have diabetes, high blood pressure and a history of respiratory problems. I'm doomed, basically. |
Terry Naylor | 14 Mar 2020 12:57 p.m. PST |
Will the punters who have bought advance tickets get a refund ? |
cavalry47 | 14 Mar 2020 2:58 p.m. PST |
Sorry to clarify it was as GunnerPhil said: "Terry I think he meant the moaners who expect SLW to take a massive hit and give free entry to traders next year. SLW are a club not a company, from what I gather no huge profit for them. I also can see that bearing the costs for the traders will be a hardship." It was the expectation that SLW should take the hit, when Govt guidance was vcarry on thus not allowing them to claim on insurance and would have been on the hook to Excel. |
Trajanus | 16 Mar 2020 11:41 a.m. PST |
Has the Government just thrown the SLW under a bus? PM's Press Conference this afternoon: everyone in the UK is now being advised to avoid "non-essential" contact with others and "unnecessary" travelpeople are also being asked to work from home "where they possibly can", and avoid pubs, clubs, theatres and social venues people are now being advised to stay at home for 14 days if they, or anyone in their household, has either a high temperature or a "new and continuous cough" people in at-risk groups will be asked within days to be "largely shielded from social contact" for 12 weeks the UK is to scale up coronavirus testing in the coming weeks from tomorrow, mass gatherings will no longer be provided with emergency workers Note: There's no ban or compulsion in the above so its a Mexican stand off between Excel and the SLW That sucks! |
Marc the plastics fan | 16 Mar 2020 11:49 a.m. PST |
Yup. That's the U.K. govt for you. By making it semi-voluntary they prevent businesses from claiming on insurance etc, so SLW cannot get out of the hallfee, Xcel make their money, and the event cannot realistically happen. What a dogs dinner. At least the rest of Europe seems to know how to act decisively |
Trajanus | 16 Mar 2020 12:03 p.m. PST |
Really hacks me off! When you think of the decades of work the SLW have put into the hobby if they come out on the short end of this it will be an outrage! |
Keith Talent | 16 Mar 2020 12:35 p.m. PST |
I work in the events business, which is truly about to be decimated, venues, suppliers, organisers, everyone, and runs largely on freelancers and gig economy workers who have zero redress. The insurance business has a lot more clout, and way more important that half a dozen insurers stay viable than many hundreds of thousands, If not millions who will have no income for many months. Apparently. |
Terry Naylor | 16 Mar 2020 12:41 p.m. PST |
I've got a holiday cottages business, the whole summer is cancelled. No income for six bloody months |
N Drury | 17 Mar 2020 11:44 a.m. PST |
Interesting comment from the Association of British Insurers today – "Standard business interruption cover – the type the majority of businesses purchase – does not include forced closure by authorities as it is intended to respond to physical damage at the property which results in the business being unable to continue to trade." So something more than government ordered closures will be required. |
Volleyfire | 17 Mar 2020 12:55 p.m. PST |
My broker told me that although Corona is now a notifiable disease it isn't on anyone's policy because it is so new, so insurers won't pay out for loss of earnings/production and they're hiding behind the smallprint because what with flooding claims and this it would bankrupt them. |
quackstheking | 17 Mar 2020 1:27 p.m. PST |
Insurance Companies – you pay to rent an umbrella from them but they won't let you have it if it rains !😤 |

I see over on LAF that SLW have postponed Salute until April next year. |
Terry Naylor | 17 Mar 2020 11:11 p.m. PST |
Not cancelled but " Postponed. " |
Trajanus | 18 Mar 2020 6:08 a.m. PST |
Lots of events are being "postponed" which is an odd use of the word to my mind. Does it mean the event next year will be Salute 2020? Anyway joking aside, here's wishing the Warlords all the best for doing the right thing and hoping it turns out well for them in the long run! 👍 |
Guthroth | 18 Mar 2020 7:44 a.m. PST |
Postponed for 12 months = Cancelled. Anything else is weasel words |
Marc the plastics fan | 18 Mar 2020 7:55 a.m. PST |
Maybe next year we will get two salute models – the ultra rare and collectible 2020 version, alongside the 2021 figure |

Latest news re the Excel site – "London's Excel conference centre will become an emergency hospital treating coronavirus patients "within days", with 500 beds initially made available at what will be the first of several crisis facilities dotted around the UK. The cavernous 100,000 sq metre Docklands site is being converted in a high-speed operation involving military planners and personnel, and its capacity will rise quickly from the initial 500 beds, defence sources said." |

Quite a sobering thought that some of us looking forward to Salute might end up at the Excel centre in April anyway. Who would have thought it. |
Trajanus | 26 Mar 2020 4:45 a.m. PST |
Look on the bright side! You would get a free ride to Excel, no parking fees and loads of space! Better deal than usual in some respects. Although perhaps not in others! Here's hoping anyone who ends up there makes a full recovery! |
