So, given the slow and anemic provisions thus far, that don't seem to be working, perhaps this one will be better.

Lock everything down from 3/15/20 until 4/15/20, or so.

Almost everyone stays home, and self-quarantines for 30 days. Only critical infrastructure and services personnel are exempt, to keep the water and electricity on, and to keep hospitals and police departments running.

Show olde, favorite re-runs and sporting events on TV, since attendance of March-madness games are off.

Come out in a month, to see what and who are still standing.

Call it the 2020 national holiday, or some such, to make it more palatable to resisters.

What if you don't have enough lead to keep you busy in this time period?
Could play a game I guess but want to finish lead up for the game.

Perhaps the US mail, and/or package deliveries to the doorstep, and/or mailbox can continue, so you can get your fix, while in lockdown.

You can wipe down the package with alcohol, and/or other sanitizers, if you have some, or can find any in the stores, prior to the lockdown, or can get it shipped to you, if there are any stocks available.

Just don't go wiping them down with the cognac, scotch, or good whiskey or bourbon.

It's getting real, my employer is doing a BCP drill.

Thresher01, I just shared your idea on Facebook. It is smart and logical. Too bad our leaders don't have he same common sense.

Dear OP,

The unemployment lines in May would be insanely long. My job has been precarious enough, thank you. Try being 60 and looking for a new job, especially in a shattered global economy.

Mister Tibbles, I think he is suggesting a paid vacation, not wholesale firings.

I'm gonna grow my beard, eat my way thru my deep freeze, get Netflix, play board games by email, paint, sort, inventory, read (y'all remember that,) sleep (a lot. I've always wanted to test drive hibernation,) ruminate on the meaning of life, and generally enjoy the blessings of retirement…

Maybe even do some cleaning…

Just as soon as I get back from Cold Wars…

Glup!

Thresher0112 Mar 2020 8:48 a.m. PST

I understand all too well, MT, being just shy of that myself.

DeRuyter12 Mar 2020 9:51 a.m. PST

Since the MLS game I was attending on Saturday is off I can stay at Cold Wars longer!

Pick up games of Oak and Iron anyone!

JMcCarroll12 Mar 2020 10:09 a.m. PST

Not too worried, still plenty of Twinkies on the selves.

Not much of TT paper left. I thought it was a respiratory illness, not a GI tract illness?

I guess people are just trying to cover their ase.

Paid by whom? You shut down the economy for a month and that means there IS no MONEY to pay anyone anything.
The US GDP is roughly $22 USD trillion, or $1.83 USD trillion per month
Yearly personal income for the entire country is roughly $18.6 USD trillion., or $1.55 USD trillion per month. That means the amount not paid to anyone personally, is about $300 USD billion a month, or 3.6 trillion over the year, which is largely taxes used to fund everything which is not part of private commerce— that is, the government (at all levels). And since that operates at a deficit already, there's nothing extra there.. Note that if nobody works, then that month there is NO input to the GDP, and thus also no equivalent input to the government, either. So you've got the government, already at a deficit, and now with even less revenue, trying to arrange to pay for everybody doing nothing for a month, with no funds whatsoever to do it with. Not only is that fundamentally impossible, it's a disaster to the economy. If nobody works, then no money is created (money being nothing more than the representation of the value of everyone's work— no work, no value). There is no giant pool of money anywhere (even in the bank accounts of the super rich) which can meet this idea.

Right now we have a virus that is only truly a health risk to the elderly and those with severe health complications already. We don't need everybody to take a month off! We need everybody to WASH THEIR HANDS and leave our medical personnel and elderly people ALONE; the former to do their jobs, the latter to avoid giving them a disease the rest of us can pretty much get over in a few weeks. There's no disaster going on. But stopping the economy for a month? That would destroy more than this virus ever could.

I am downloading a lot of porn, just in case the internet goes down.

Too bad we don't have UBI to take the edge off. Would come in handy right now, especially for folks who don't get paid if they call in sick. #yanggang

Parzival I think you are underestimating the number of people who have immunity or breathing issues. The majority of those in my family at risk are not 80 though we have quite a few of those as well. But you do have a good point – everyone can't just vacation.

While I am unfortunately not currently employed, my former company is directing most of the staff to work from home. They have all the tools, video conferencing and computer skills to be productive from home. As I understand it the hourly support staff will be getting limited tasks but still paid. Given that is a very minor percentage of the company and it's labor expense I doubt it will have any impact. I expect many companies in the financial or technical space should be able to do the same. We have practiced going 100% remote on several occasions.

Sure there are industries that we need to keep working (i.e. transportation, certain manufacturing industries and food distribution to name a few) but minimizing what we can certainly can't hurt.

14Bore, is really possible any of us don't have a big enough mountain to last for a few weeks? grin

Anyone at risk of running out of things to paint after a couple of weeks, is just not a serious gamer.
