I read Grant's memoirs about 20 years ago. I know that it was Mark Twain who urged him to write them and that Grant spent the last few weeks of his life writing them as he was struggling with throat cancer. They are considered one of the greatest war memoirs ever written. If you want something lighter but still enjoyable to read, I would recommend "Campaigning with Grant" by Horace Porter, who was a staff officer serving under Grant.
