Anyone know anything about this?

Apparently. they bought the game and system from Mongoose publishing some time back. I do not know if it is a revised version of the Mongoose rules, or a completely new set.

The ships look okay but the bases are a deal breaker for me.

Wackmole906 Mar 2020 12:44 p.m. PST

Scale is the same as the Axis and Allies War at sea 1/1800th

PaulB06 Mar 2020 1:13 p.m. PST

I agree with Texas Jack, I like the scale of the ships but the bases are ghastly.

ScottWashburn Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Mar 2020 1:28 p.m. PST

Have to agree about the bases…

4DJones06 Mar 2020 1:31 p.m. PST

I'd hope the bases are detachable?

coopman06 Mar 2020 1:51 p.m. PST

I'm not going down this Codex path ever again if I can help it. Got burned with Cruel Seas and that's it. I'll spend my wargaming dollars elsewhere.

It rings up as "No Sale" for me. I am very happy with Seapower II and my 1/1200s. I will not start another scale and coopman has a valid point in his statement above. I would only say the Cruel Seas is a perfectly fine game once you rewrite it and the scale does match with my Micro Armor & other 6mm collections.

Rudysnelson06 Mar 2020 2:40 p.m. PST

I never got into the earlier Victory at Sea. I was put off by the random selection of ships and being unknown in each package.
The selling individual ships as collectibles was also a bummer.
So I do not know whether the ships were plastic or resin.
I hope Warlord goes plastic since resin ships like the Cruel Seas would make the system too expensive to stock in my store.

Rudy,

You are thinking of Axis & Allies WAR at Sea. Mongoose's VICTORY at Sea did not have random or collectible ships.

In fact they only had a very few ships of their own.

And the rules are completely different.

Cheers,
Ed

Rudysnelson06 Mar 2020 5:25 p.m. PST

Ed thanks for the clarification. I never saw the Mongoose system on my distributors site.

I am really excited to get this. Victory at Sea are my favourite naval rules so I want to see what Warlord have done to tweek them. Ive already got massive fleets of 1/3000 ships but I'm ready to try a new scale. Hopefully they will do the Age of Dreadnoughts VaS supplement one day too.

Honestly I prefer Naval Thunder, but Victory at Sea handled aircraft better in the old edition. Curious to see how this new edition handles them. Those bases are truly awful. I would get an occasional ship to fill out my existing AA War at Sea ships, but only if they are cheaper than what I can get on Shapeways.

coopman06 Mar 2020 7:38 p.m. PST

I'd bet that the base and ship model are molded together as one piece. We shall see…

David Manley07 Mar 2020 3:35 a.m. PST

"In fact they only had a very few ships of their own."

Whilst they only got a few in to miles they had a few hundred worked up as CAD models which they were hoping to produce. I'm assuming the deal they have with Warlord includes those models as well

jsmcc9107 Mar 2020 3:52 a.m. PST

I am not too impressed with the models. There are better models out there.

Was VAS one of the aircraft carriers on the table rules?

Andy Tea09 Mar 2020 4:24 a.m. PST

I've been looking at some of the questions people have been asking Warlord about it on Facebook as well as asking some of my own

Its a completely new ruleset, not just a tweak of the old rules
the bases are moulded onto the minis
the minis are resin

"the bases are moulded onto the minis"

Oh, too bad. 1/1800 scale could be interesting but those bases are a visual distraction in a visual hobby.

Take a band saw and slice them free?

mysteron Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2020 5:08 a.m. PST

The bases appear to be putting off some people. I can't say I like the either. Perhaps one could use another make of ships even if they are of a different scale ?

Wargamer Blue11 Mar 2020 5:58 a.m. PST

Nothing stopping you from using different ships.

ScottWashburn Sponsoring Member of TMP12 Mar 2020 5:20 p.m. PST

Will there be specific ship cards which force you to buy their models to get the cards?

Costanzo113 Mar 2020 1:04 p.m. PST

It's hard to spend 130 Euros, in preorder, knowing there are 26 models … what?

I might take a punt on the starter set seen as its only £50.00 GBP but I wnt get to involved until the Italians come out

Trajanus26 Mar 2020 9:13 a.m. PST

It would be really nice to see someone come up with something that's not:

When rolling to hit, a score of 4 or more on a d6 is required, this roll is subject to several modifiers – a target's range, ship class, speed and much more can affect an attack's accuracy.

Damage is then dealt with by rolling a number of d6 for each hit dictated by a weapon's Damage Dice characteristic.

These rolls can themselves be modified by applying the weapon's armour-piercing characteristic. When rolling for damage, it is possible to score a critical hit which can have some extremely debilitating effects.

Or words to that effect.

There are so many rules in so many periods that just trot out this same old stuff I can hardly tell what I'm playing any more!

Bozkashi Jones28 Mar 2020 5:38 a.m. PST

Trajanus – agreed, which is why I use a homebrew set which uses cumulative dice rolls for ranging and hit locations and their effect for damage – no 'hit points'.

I also concentrate on command decision for balancing crew resource and damage control; players have to *think* about this, not just roll a '5' or what have you. I play mostly KM v RN so my actions are usually only 2/3 ships per side so this is easily managed.

Essentially, I want to feel as if I'm in a Douglas Reeman novel when I'm defending a convoy against a pair of German destroyers in the Arctic, and not feel that I'm playing some form of Yahtzee with miniatures.

Though I will break ranks and say that I quite like the ships – if they're sold individually so I can collect the units I want I could well be interested – depending on price, of course!
