I just backed the Steel Fist 15mm ECW Miniatures Kickstarter and I'm excited to receive my figures and get started in this period.

This question is for 15mm ECW figure experts: judging from the photos shared on the Kickstarter, what is your best guess for compatible ranges?

Steel Fist 15mm ECW Kickstarter

They mention that their minis are 15mm to the top of the head (not eyes), but I'm also interested in the bulk and heft of the miniatures. I am somewhat familiar with the other ranges for 15mm ECW miniatures, yet I don't have any in my possession to make an informed guess on compatibility. Maybe Matchlock?

Thanks in advance for your insight!

From the pictures with the ruler I would imagine that they will sit most comfortably next to Peter Pig. Magister Militum are slightly smaller, Freikorps/QRF foot should be okay, forget their horse as they are all over the place heightwise. Naismith might fit well too. Matchlock, Essex and Minifigs are all a bit taller, Matchlock chunkier too: so they should be okay but not in the same unit.

Ignore all the 18mm – Eureka, Blue Moon etc

Guess we'll only really know when we get our hands on them

When I first saw them I thought Essex, that's what they resemble. KYPD38 hit all the smaller ranges. Magister Militum are the old Chariot line. All of those are really nice too.

Wow! Thanks for the quick response!

I'm not as concerned about the cavalry. I'm really looking into bulking up the infantry bases. It sounds like I need to check out the smaller sculpts this evening… and probably Essex (as it was mentioned twice!).

I'll be curious to see how the sculpting quality compares to Steel Fist.

Thank you again for the feedback. If anyone else has more to contribute, I'd be glad to hear it. TMP has such knowledgeable members!

Stylistically Essex are very different to the Steel Fist figures, they'd look pretty incongruous in close proximity to one another. (Essex are taller than Peter Pig by a couple of millimetres)

Peter Pig would be a better fit heightwise and style wise. Some of the figures might be just slightly stockier than the Steel Fist though.

Madaxeman website has a bunch of ECW comparison figures for 15mm on the many older ranges. That will give you a good start.

Aw, that's a bummer. I liked the sculpting of the Essex and was hoping that they'd look good with the Steel Fist minis. It sounds like they are too big.

I'll look at the other figures recommended. Thanks for the tip!

I'll head over there and have a look. I think that I've been there in the past, but I wasn't considering a project in this scale/period at the time. Thank you for the recommendation, YogiBearMinis!

I was also impressed by the proposed Steel Fist ECW range. They look to be very well-proportioned. I was surprised that the figures will be "smaller" 15s, I also immediately thought of the Peter Pig range as being compatible. I'm hoping they will look fine with Minifigs and Essex as well. I know I will end up buying some of them – can't resist!

Cheers!

I was taken with the Steel Fist sculpting as well. The ruffles. The feathers. The curly hair. The straps. The horse tack. It's all there, and it looks like the minis will be a dream to paint!

It is surprising that they are on the smaller end of the 15mm scale. When I looked at the Peter Pigs, I wondered how they would hold up next to the Steel Fist minis. There seems to be far less detail on the PP figures. I wonder if that would be obvious if they were mixed in the same unit?

… sit most comfortably next to Peter Pig. Magister Militum are slightly smaller…

I just ordered a few packs of infantry from Magister Militum. To my eye (and I could be wrong) they seem to have a bit more sculpted detail than the Peter Pig offerings. PP seems to have a larger range, but I'm making a tradeoff between range versus detail.

If the MM troops are a bit shorter, I just won't press them down as much into the hot glue when I mount them. I also might use them as interior figures in infantry blocks.

Thanks again for everyone's input. The TMP users' knowledge is wide and deep… and detailed!

I saw the saw the size comparison photo for the new Steel Fist ECW range. It is correct to call them smaller 15s. They look very size compatible with Peter Pig and probably Minifigs. I have been looking for figures to mix in with what I have in 15mm ECW. It appears these will do nicely.

Cheers!

Be careful with Minifigs as they do vary considerably in size. The armed peasants, for example, tower over Peter Pig figures, whereas the Minifigs miniature in the size comparison picture is much smaller (and more of a match for PP).

Now that is interesting! I didn't know that the Minifigs varied within their own range so much. I'm mostly interested in pikemen and musketeers from them. I guess I'll order a few and see what happens!

My figures have arrived at last – well done to Steel Fist for battling through the Covid obstacles

Great figures, lots of character, but very much on the smaller side. Seem to fit well with my PP chaps, and fine on same battlefield as my Minifigs cavalry. Perhaps a bit flimsy? Horse in particular are quite delicate (but then I've got fashion-conscious early war Royalists)

I'm just sorry my collection is (more than) complete as I'd be back for more.

But I've never understood those who like Essex – have you EVER seen any human being doing the legs-apart stance other than on the ballet stage? Just my opnion of course.
