Well, after the Dong Ba Tower I wanted something simpler and this is just that. A wall made with various lengths and shapes of plastic rod. Cronkite and his crew made from Gingos40 figures, heavily converted, and the command group straight from the maker. Funny thing. Plainest diorama I have done and Mrs F thought this was my best work to date!

I will leave you to imagine the language used trying to superglue the cables for the microphone, the cameraman and the sound engineer.

Thanks! That beats all records for a fast response….

Had meant to attach a photo of the real thing. Generally he did wear a helmet when filming but this shows the crew to best advantage;

Well done! I think you have outdone yourself, and that is saying a lot.

I am delighted with your responses. My wife Elaine has seen many a diorama emerge and loved this one. I was frankly convinced it was lacking anything spectacular, personally. I thought it was almost dull.

I have been trying to learn a lesson in my work. Do not overcomplicate it. The simplest things sometimes work best. I have made an effort to stop overdoing the foliage on bases, I am trying not to pack so many figures to the square inch. You have convinced me now to stick to that….thanks all

Great work. Really evoked the details in the picture.

By 'simple', you allow all of the other details to come thru. The colors are magnificent! Newer boots for the newsmen, but old, spare flak jackets. Clean clothes, but dirty boots. It's [sniff] perfect.

That is dreadful….send it to me for safe disposal……

I am a great fan as you know. On balance this needs more contrast to match up to the B&W photos I have of his visit to Hue. Let me attach three of them.

But again thanks everyone. Mrs F would welcome uglyfatbloke taking these away. The attic is beginning to fill with boxes of Napoleonic figures, but that is better than the literally hundreds of ship kits, not one of which was ever finished!

Liam,
my vision isn't that good, so I missed that detail the first time you posted the diorama, but your Cronkite figure is so real that it is scary! WOW! Incredible job!

I still like the "greyscale" photos personally.

The Cronkite figure was a bit of good luck. I had long wondered how I could create the film crew and old Wally himself. I needed bareheaded figures not laden down with armaments, but with a VN look. Then came the bare chested mortar crew, who were just perfect with arms sawn off and moved around somewhat, for the loader/cameraman.

But Cronkite. I had long noticed one chap who appears either with his arm in a sling or holding an M16. For good luck that left arm is separately cast, so the M16 turned into an oversized microphone. He had to lose one grenade off his belt, but the ring is still there I now see. the best thing was that he is "full faced" and frankly looks much "more senior" than most of his companions.
