We all know who Sun Tzu is I guess, and he's got strategic thinking that is brillient. But what about the tactical aspects of ancient Chinese warfare?

Any recommendations there?

Ralph Sawyer's translation of The Seven Military Classics of Ancient China (of which Master Sun is, of course, one).

The Thirty-Six Strategies is pretty interesting. Originally attributed to Sun Tzu, it's believed that these proverbs were written by Zhuge Liang during Three Kingdoms period.

Try searching for Chinese Battle Formations.

Also Ancient Chinese Warfare by Ralph Sawyer, which covers pre-history to the Shang IIRC. He was also supposed to be doing further books covering later periods but I think these have been delayed.

'The Eurasian Way of War: Military Practice in Seventh-Century China and Byzantium' by David Graff covers some tactical practices in Tang Chinese armies, and compares them with practice in contempory Byzantine armies.
