…Fleet)

"The Magallanes-Elcano was a maritime expedition financed by the Spanish Crown and commanded by Fernando de Magallanes. At Magellan's death the command was handed over to Juan Sebastián Elcano and with him in charge they completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth.

The expedition aim was to open a new commercial route with the species islands, the Moluccas, from the Western route looking for a passage between the Atlantic and Pacific ocean. It consisted of five vessels : Trinidad, the flagship, (110 tn ), San Antonio (120 tn),Concepción (90 tn ), Victoria ( 85 tn) and Santiago ( 75 tn) which left Seville in August 1519 and later on Sanlúcar de Barrameda ( outer port of Seville at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river ) in September 1519…."

Very nice diorama. Not sure wether these ships really all were moored so close to the shore, but it makes for an impressive sight.

On the successfull circumnavigation one might note that one of the Survivers, Gunner "Mastre Anes", one Hans from Aachen, went – together with several other survivors – on to the next circumnavigation and was one of just four survivors, making him the first (known) man on earth to circumnavigate twice. He vanished during his third expedition – not the domestic type, this one :-)

I've often been tempted to scratchbuild this little fleet. Great diorama but the ships look a little high in the water, and I'd think they would have a bit more decor.
