Can anyone recommend a decent portable spray booth that I can use without having to vent out a window? I only use water based paints and would I have no interest in building one so no need to suggest that route. As always thanks in advance for your suggestions.

A box.

Seriously.

Water based paint from an airbrush is not going to pollute your air with chemicals like enamels. (Go inside any auto body shop or just stand downwind of one – they use thinner based paints.)

If you want to get really fancy, put a fine furnace filter in the back of it with a box fan up against pulling the air through the box and then the filter.

I'm with wmyers. I always use a box. Cardboard box, of course. Disposable. Free.

But use a mask as well. Any kind of paint is not good for your lungs.

Most portable boxes I've seen do not require venting outside unless the paint fumes are toxic. I use a simple portable system with a fan, seems to be copied by everyone. Advantage of the fan is that it pulls the excess spray towards the filter and not on your furniture or your spouse's wrath.

I use mine as a vented booth depending on the weather and what I am spraying. I like the strong drawing power of the built in fan. Mine is an older heavy unit though. Some of the new portable ones appear to be easy to set up and breakdown. Quite a few on Amazon by Master Airbrush.

The fine mist from acrylic paint is not good for your lungs, even though it doesn't have solvent fumes.

The fan is a much better solution. It sucks the fumes away from you and through a filter. I have a fixed booth in my garage but didn't install a wall vent for the hose. I normally pull the vent hose over to a window, but sometimes forget and it vents off to one side. This is still much better than no fan.

I use this, which comes with a venting hose.

If you don't want to vent, wrap a sheet of paper towel on the exhaust end and fasten with an elastic band. The fan sucks the spray to the back and the aerosol is trapped. I'd still use a mask however.

I guess I would add that I use a box outside. That limits me to days, or times of day, that are not too windy,* but that's not unduly burdensome.

Do wear a mask, just a simple dust mask, and eye protection -- especially if you're painting outside.

*I suppose it limits me to days that are not raining or too cold or too hot, but we almost never have bad weather where I live.
