Hope the people who provisioned that website weren't involved in writing the script …

The title comes from the WWII battleship of the same name.

Hanks is rather old to be playing a commander of a "greyhound of the sea."

Just read the book, "The Good Shepherd", on which the movie is based. Quite an enjoyable read. I can see it making a good movie if the lead is up to the challenge and the script is well constructed. Hanks is probably the best I can imagine for the role.

Thanks, Mark, I was only mildly interested in seeing this until you noted that it's based on "The Good Shepard," which I read on a plane last year. Now I'm stoked!

I wish someone would do "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors".

I too read it on a plane. Well, actually on 4 different planes, as my company is too cheap to pay extra for non-stop flights. But in any case, it was my "I'm stuck here for hours and this is good sit-still-and-do-nothing entertainment" as well.

Except that I had the exact opposite causal link from ou. I chose the book because I saw the upcoming movie mentioned in another TMP thread. Looked into it, saw that it was based on a C.S. Forester book. I read and loved the entire Hornblower series (read it 3 times), and thought it looked like a reasonable addition to my Kindle library for my then-upcoming travels.

And it was.

According to the YouTube trailer YouTube link Tom Hanks did the screenplay. And even though Hanks is "old" the character he portrays doesn't look that old – the magic of movie makeup. Definitely on my "to watch" list.

Looks pretty darn good based on the trailer at least.

I feel seasick just thinking about it.

Hanks is far too old for the role [as he was to play his role in Saving Private Ryan]. And the CGI looks like a video game from what can be seen in the trailer.

Less would be more – but I fear we will get too much action and too little drama. We won't care about the characters' fates.

I could be wrong and hope I am. This is a part of history that deserves to be be remembered.

Great book; hope the movie is as well. Penguin has just published a paperback, movie tie-in.
