"In 2019, the United States remained by far the world's largest defence spender, widening the gap between it and the second largest spender, China. US investments in weapons procurement and R&D alone were larger than China's total defence budget. The United States' defence investments in weapons procurement and R&D were also worth around four times as much as European states' combined…"

Way too much; it's all rather insane.

Global state spending never cease to grow…
and 1$ does not mean the same thing everywhere.

How much is spent on US salaries? ( and rightly so )

" A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction…

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence—economic, political, even spiritual—is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military–industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together."
-President Eisenhower

Eisenhower was 100% right.

I would say a lot of US defence spending is inefficient be it some of the ridiculous failed defence projects aka DDG1000 and LCS or a myriad of frozen little wars that do nothing to keep USA safe.

There are also many small bases and programs that should be scrapped but are retained because of politics. Basically as the US allowedt the North Asians and Mexico to take over civilian consumer production, the military industrial complex grew in importance as the only way of sustaining many regions economic prosperity.

It's a very dangerous world, and one needs to be prepared.
