"For the two years that I lived and worked in Hollywood, California, I steadfastly refused to buy a car or drive: a position considered tantamount to insanity in a city that thrives on physical, as much as it does social, mobility. I had no desire to inhale exhaust fumes on the perpetually traffic-clogged interstate, no reason to deviate from my commute to my office in Century City, and no yearning to satisfy the inquiries made at bars and parties that begin with "what do you do?" and end with "what kind of car do you drive?" During my brief tenure among the beautiful people in the provinces of Hollywoodland, my transportation needs were filled by walking, catching the bus, or using Uber…"

IIRC Chicago had a helicopter service from O'Hare to the Loop in the early 1970s until there was a crash. |

They say "taxis" but what they mean is specific high-end point-to-point air transport. They don't mean call the air taxi and it comes to your house then takes you to the movies. You couldn't land a rotary wing vehicle within a mile of my house. Nor could you get one into the area of my most frequented movie theatre. Same goes for my work building and the dozen or so other local work sites for me. A couple have hospitals or other buildings with helicopter pads within a couple blocks. So, again, walk to a designated point, take a point-to-point tip, and walk again. But when you consider congestions, now you are limited to fewer spaces that can accommodate fewer passengers per square foot. So it's like a more expensive and less flexible version of metropolitan train systems. |
