You were asked – TMP link Have you ever played an Ancients game with 54mm figures? 75% said "no, I haven't gamed with 54mm Ancients" 14% said "yes, I've gamed with 54mm Ancients" |

Maybe the more interesting question is "would you". |

Where the heck do you even find enough 54mm ancients to game with? I have seen very little in the way of ancients in 54mm. |

There's actually quite a few figures out there, but you won't find much on your regular gaming sites. There usually found on Ebay and through places like the Michigan Toy Soldier company. You can get boxes of figs for one unit for under $20 USD, so it's pretty cheap. However, the quality varies greatly, finding specific units can be tough, then painting 54mm is at a whole other level. |

You don't need to paint them if they come in at least two different colors to represent the armies; Then you won't feel guilty when you start chucking dirt clods at them… ;-) |

With games like Mortal Gods only having 3 figures per base, why not use Real Toy Soldiers, like those from King & Country? |

Where the heck do you even find enough 54mm ancients to game with? I have seen very little in the way of ancients in 54mm. Timpo used to make some very nice 54mm ancients moulded in colour. Good luck finding them today, though.
'Hat' also makes a fair mount of 54mm ancients for Punic Wars. hat.com/current32.html Most are unpainted, though, and are made with 2 piece moulds so can be flat looking. These Toyway/Timpo Romans (current production, I believe) are better historically:

I've run games in 54mm at a number of conventions over the past 20 years including Little Wars and HIstoricon. Figures are plentiful. Painting is fun and easy in the larger scale. Check out Expeditionary Force for the most detailed figures and lines designed with gaming in mind. link PM me if you'd like more info on this. Bill |

Have you seen the figures by Expeditionary Force of Singapore? Very nice figures indeed |

Those Exp Force figures really are very good indeed! |

It would take Victrix-like quality for me to delve into 54mm but it would be enjoyable to do 1 Ancient or War of the Roses battle with them. |

Those Expeditionary Force figures look nice, but all the ancients are 60mm not 54mm, if you had some actual 54mm already wouldn't they be incompatible? |

The Conte Spartans are great for big scale with very paintable detail.
These seem good too:

54mm figures can be easily accessible and inexpensive. Try a model shop or supplier rather than a Gaming Store that specialises in Warhammer stuff (where mostly you'll find 28mm stuff I think)
These are inexpesive (mostly Hat) figures …
The only limit is your imagination/ The pictures are from my local show, Hereward … Hereward 2018 Phil |

I have been "toying" with the idea of using these "realistic" Asterix the Gaul figures and pitting them against Deetail Romans auction |
