Hello folks – I am in the UK for one day next week and have meetings in Luton and Telford and arriving at Heathrow. Any recommendations for shops to visit close to the M1, the M6 and the M54 that I can hit quickly? It too sort of a trip but one must take advantage of whatever one can.

Sorry to disappoint you but your route doesn't really go past any. There may well be a few small model shops en route that sell game materials, but no 'must see' shops.

Whilst the distances involved probably seem like nothing in US terms, in the UK that is quite a journey (M6 is notorious for delays, quite a lot of it has reduced speed limits at the moment as it is being 'upgraded', same with M1 before you turn off for the M6 if my memory serves me right)

Next time try and arrange your meetings in Nottingham 😉

Can't help with any shops, either.

Your journey isn't too bad, though! M1 has a lot of 50mph speed limits through the roadworks, but you should miss the worst of the M6 as that is further north. M54 should be no problem – not a lot of traffic and no speed cameras that I know of!

I think I must be unusual for a Brit. I often drive six or seven hundred miles in a day. When I tell people they tend to look at me as though I'm insane!

How long have you got for a shopping stop? Instead of a shop, maybe take a look at a historical site? We are up to our ears in them…

There is the Wargames Workshop in Milton Keynes, not too far from the M1. link
If you go, the shop is in a pedestrianised bit which you can't see from the car park.

Spirit Games spiritgames.co.uk is further north than the M6 but can be on an alternative route between the M1 and Telford.

Don't envy your horrible journey.

Spirit games in Burton on Trent is doable.

Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale are the "cradle" of the British Industrial Revolution – and just down the road from Telford.

As others have said, forget shops (sadly none worth visiting these days, especially for historical gaming) and visit something historical on the route instead – Warwick or Kenilworth maybe, but a lot depends on the route you take – and, depending on the date/time, allow at least twice as long as you expect for the driving!
