Interesting…., but why are the saddle blankets over the saddles instead of under the saddles?

All the troops seem to be wearing greatcoats, so it must be cold. Throw an extra blanket over the horse to keep it warm?

In the very first sequence featuring John Wayne (Capt Brittles) and Victor McLaglen (Sgt. Quincannon) are getting ready for morning inspection, everyone is wearing greatcoates.

Wayne has his over his shoulders and as they leave his quarters, in the immediate background two horses (you can see their heads in strip of film above) that are tied to a hitching rail have blankets over their saddles.

A few moments later when the ambushed Stagecoach enters the Fort, escorted by the Paradise River Patrol, you can see all the horses breath in the air.

Its a cold morning! ;o)

Trooper:

I remember Wayne, Agar and Harry Cary Jr with greatcoats in that early sequence, but don't recall seeing the horses with blankets over them; guess I'll have to pay closer attention the next time I watch SWaYR.

Its not a featured moment, helps if you have the DVD but its clear enough not to require pausing the action. They are side on as the actors walk away from them so its clear enough to see.

Gets cold in Monument Valley!

They are not saddle blankets but blankets used to keep the horses warm.

I am most envious but there are a lot of learns and the laser printing tip is genius.

Hate to tell you Chris but they are Horse Blankets. They may be being used to keep the horses warm but the stripe is a give away.

Civil War buffs (including me) spend a lot of time painting those stripes on their minatures! 🙂

I dare say all army blankets had them but most folks would recognise them under a saddle.

Actually, the overcoates and the blankets in the film are anachronistic in that the action takes place shortly after the Little Big Horn which was in June 1876 and the filming was clearly done on a really cold morning!

Have to confess I've never been to Utah but if you can see horses breath on a Summer morning I'd be surprised!

Anyway, great movie and great minatures!

Yes you are right with the red stripe for US Cavalry.

My point was that they were being used to keep the horses warm rather than protecting their backs.

Good spot about the time of year.

Did you pick up on the laser printing for the ammunition boxes?

Yes its very good, though to tell the truth I was admiring the the rope handles so much that I took the lettering for granted.

Which I a kind of way is the point!
