… and the Genesis of the Operational Manoeuvre Group by John S. Harrel ""Soviet Cavalry Operations During the Second World War" is self-explanatory in terms of what this volume offers readers. Without a doubt the Red Army employed cavalry formations to a larger degree than any other combatant throughout the Second World War. Considering the size and geography of the Eastern Front, the Soviets were presented with a variety of favorable opportunities to utilize their cavalry formations since the first days of the war. John Harrel has done a commendable job in putting together a readable synthesis of many of these operations, showing both the reasons for their successes and failures, and providing a brief analysis of their impact on Germany's ability to wage war and how the Red Army was able to utilize the forces and strengths at their disposal after suffering horrendous losses throughout the first few years of the war. From initially using cavalry divisions and corps as raiding forces in German rear areas, to the creation of cavalry-mechanized groups that became essential in breakthrough and exploitation operations, the Red Army's cavalry arm deserves our attention and respect considering how much they were able to accomplish under the circumstances they found themselves facing…" Main page link Amicalement Armand

Here's a scenario on this topic for the Panzer Corps divisional level rules: The GREAT CAVALRY RAID August 1941 Scenario: August 29, 1941 -- The Wehrmacht continued their advance on Smolensk, but under repeated attacks by combined Army Groups a gap appeared in the German lines between their 2nd Panzer Group and LVII Corps. Your task is to drive your formations through this gap into the German rear and wreak as much havoc as possible on their supply lines to stall their advance. Good luck, General, the Motherland is counting on you! As Major General Lev Mikhailovich Dovator you must drive your Cavalry Group deep behind German lines to disrupt their line of supply and destroy as many installations as possible. Your first objective is the German forward depot at Babriusk, which is defended by the German 31st Infantry Division of the 2nd Panzer Group – destroy the depot. From there you will continue to the German communications lager at Mogilyov – destroy the communications center. Then you will raid the German depot and repair lager at Osipovitchy – destroy these facilities. Then return with your forces to friendly lines as best as you can near Gomel – exit as many of your forces as possible off the Eastern edge of the table. PDF link |
