I was watching 1917 (question has nothing to do with plot – so no spoiler here), and I noticed a couple of the soldiers had something strange wire looking thing on the sides of helmet brim.
They were kind of sticking up.

Maybe part of the buckles of the chin strap? if, so, top of the brim would be a strange place to put the buckle – unless the strap ran through the brim.
