As a break from painting miniatures and as I like building terrain as much as painting miniatures, I started to do some more terrain for my Vietnam gaming table. I decided that my jungle wasn't dense enough so there have to be more jungle scatter pieces. There were only a few palm trees so there have to be done some more. But most important I wanted to do some bigger elephant grass patches and a landingzonye for my choppers.

The elephant grass test piece was done by glueing pieces of artificial grass to a plastic base , adding filler round the edges of the grass to blend it all in , adding sand and scatter and of course paint.

So this looks like a small path through the grass doesn't it?

Next up my LZ ( landing zone) done like the elephant grass with a wider central free space for the choppers to land in

Especially the elephant grass pieces look magnificent! What a you using for EG? And those paths through them look very nice.

When applying static grass I would recommend add it it on more numerous and more irregular sized smaller area to make it look more natural.

I think the smaller bases (for the palms) do not blend in well with the other pieces just because of the size looks kinda odd with the rest of them. Upping the size to 3-4 times and adding a second or third palm should do the trick -at least I think it worked with my tree bases.

For example the one on the lower right of this pic with a bigger base and bigger palm works noticeably better. Mot likely as it look more naturalistic with more base and more terrain bits. link

Years ago I was amazed to find out that plenty of the Vietnamese soil has a distinctive reddish hue. Certainly can't apply to everywhere though, right?

Lastly, try giving the clump foliage and static grass some quick drybrushing too; it'll improve the look even more with rather minimal effort.

I've actually even painted the plastic plants to make them look bit less, erm, plasticky but that is rather big a chore and not all that necessary.

Good job and carry on!

There was a discussion here about varying soil colours in Vietnam

…indeed it comes up as a specific search term on Google.

The terrain is great and I love the low angle shot of the path. Even without a trip wire or obvious Punji stakes, nothing would induce me to use that thoroughfare.

@Tom: Simply excellent. That 2nd pic in particular looks amazing!

Loving your Vietnam posts. Keep it up (please).

That's so cool!! I don't do any modern era military wargaming but it's always awesome to see well-made jungle-type terrain like this.
