I was wondering what your experiences are with the Battle of Paraitakene.

On paper it looks like an uphill climb for Eumenes what with the severe deficit in Heavy Infantry. Of course he's got an advantage in Elephants and Lite Infantry but I'm curious to hear if that's enough to make the battle competitive?

As an aside, I've read the couple of AARs here at TMP but not any outside ones.
Thanks.

My second favorite Successor battle next to Raphia.

I did it once. The battle was close but Antigonus won. It is one of the few ancient battles with detailed orders of battle and is very colorful, particularly with all those elephants.

It was the 2018 Society of Ancients Battleday battle. See link

I wrote a report of our DBMM game in Slingshot 319, and there were others in 316, 318 and 320 (see link.) There are some discussion threads on the SoA Forum at link

If Eumenes can win either or both wings, it can give the argyraspides enough time to make their experience tell.

At our battle at the Society of Ancients Battle Day, Eumenes _and_ Antigonus lost, since both were killed :) Other than that, things were fairly even with each left wing defeating its opponent IIRC.

Indeed 17 different ways!

BattleDay, Basic Impetus etc.

Probably the best was the 6mm DBA (on big bases) – probably the most plausible representation that I saw. Played nicely to time, too.

I ran Paraitakene three times at various club meetings in 2018. Order of battle, AAR's, and photos at

The third battle was a Pyrrhic victory for Antigonos.

Well I was in one of the DBMM games it at the SOA battle day, It was close but Antigonus won through having a lot more cavalry on his left flank. What is interesting is how they used the Elephants in this battle, as a sort of skirmish screen which they withdrew! They then all appear again at Gabiene.

Most rules don't allow for this, Although I'm told Tactica 2 does.

All interesting info and results. Makes me want to play this battle all that more.

I think I'll be doing Heraclea first to dip my toe into Successors then Paraitakene.

The great thing about Paraitakene, as mentioned above, is once you collect both armies for that battle then you've pretty much already got the armies for Gabiene.

Long time since this pre-pandemic post.

I was wondering if anyone from above (or anyone in general) still has an Orbat for this battle. I'd love to see how people broke down all of those Light Troops into units.

Thanks!
