The story of the eagle of the 14th Ligne is apocryphal. This is one of those stories by Marbot where he is 'remembering with advantages.' |

he story of the eagle of the 14th Ligne is apocryphal. This is one of those stories by Marbot where he is 'remembering with advantages.' Kevin, what is your overall opinion of Marbot? Is he reliable overall or is most of it remembering with advantages?' I know I can't trust his assessments, like his claim that he could have taken Lisbon and that the lines of Torres Vedras were not a serious obstacle. |

Enjoy the ride but don't take anything too seriously that involves him in a positive light. Interestingly he is deafeningly silent about what he was up to on Napoleon's right flank at Waterloo as the Prussians hove into view. It's anybody's guess, although Paul Dawson's work in the Vincennes archives flags up some interesting casualty data we'll never know for certain. |

read Bernard Coppens – Waterloo – Les mensonges, here you will gain interesting comments of Marbot (not published in his memoires) he stated that on the right flank – we manoeuvred like citrons. |

Read that but it's not clear what he means by manoeuvring like lemons… by comparison his ‘heroic' exploits are described at length and in detail. It's not even clear who he is referring to – I read it as a comment on the army as a whole rather than on his hussar regiment. |

he meant that they did a very bad job and were indeed surprised when the Prussians stepped in with two Prussian brigades into the battle – in later comments he back paddled on this and adopted the clairvoyant Boney view, who knew everything but did not do anything.. |

'who knew everything but did not do anything..' So he didn't beat the Prussians then? LOL |

Kevin, what is your overall opinion of Marbot? Great read, use with caution. That being said, he was a regimental commander twice (23d Chasseurs a Cheval and 7th Hussars) and I would tend to 'trust' his comments regarding his regiments in combat. His tales, like that of the 14th Ligne, are incorrect, so if he is going to be used as a source, he has to be cross-checked. He took the term 'remember with advantages' to a whole new level. |

Great pictures! Eylau is one of my favorite Napoleonic battles and it's far too obscure. |
