Earlier this afternoon, the BBC re-broadcast an outstanding radio adaptation of "Animal Farm". What on earth could Orwell have been thinking about when he named his central character "Napoleon" ? Now, where did I put that tin hat……? |

You know having read the book about 45 years ago but picked up its meaning immediately kinda forgot the title character was named Napoleon. |

Under the Bolsheviks, one of the derogatory terms they used to describe potential military aspirants to power was ‘Bonapartists'. As Orwell was well versed in the terminology used by the Communists, using Napoleon as the name for the eventual leader of the animals makes logical sense. |
