"After visiting the museums and locations in the center and on the western Waterloo battlefield in recent years, this year I wanted to explore all the other sights on my visit. When visiting the battlefield, I always find it important to develop a feeling for the landscape and its special features. this includes not only hills and valleys, but also watercourses, paths and of course buildings. Fortunately, the landscape on the Waterloo battlefield is still almost undeveloped…." UT

Despite which the writer refers throughout to "Waterloo" and not "La Belle Alliance". It's almost as though everybody agrees the battle should be called Waterloo apart from a tiny handful of noisy cranks. |

The last big battle of the napoleonic era is named after a wet forest instead of a synonym for a joint effort. Yeah, thatīs nice. Guess I am a noisy crank, have to look up what it means, though… |

Isn't it named, as per custom, after the headquarters where the victorious British commander wrote his dispatch. |

No, itīs named after the place where the victorious allied commander wrote a dispatch |

Presumably the victorious Prussian commander wrote his own despatch, no? |

He has taken some very nice photos. Not often the gentle slope is apparent as a true ridge, East of the crossroads, in photography. The walk from La Haye up to La Belle Alliance is superb (even if just on Google Earth). So that is what is meant by a sunken lane! Down by Paplelotte/Smohian/La Haye you do get to appreciate just how broken is the ground and what an obstacle to any advance it presents. Good find Tango |
