… murders, mafias and ecological devastation.

"It's difficult to believe that sand — that seemingly innocuous little granule — could cause any trouble, let alone lead to murder.

And that's probably because we tend to take it for granted.

"Even though most people never even think about it, sand is all around you pretty much all the time," says US journalist Vince Beiser, who has written a book on sand and civilisation…."

So this is the next thing we have to fear? I'll pass.

Well everyone has been worried about what could save economies in the Middle East if we ever come to a day when oil is not needed; I guess now we have an answer. And yes I read the article, but I figure if the Saudis can find methods of making salt water useful for agriculture, then they can find something to make all of their sand useful.

They warned us long ago that if the government was left in charge of deserts, we would end up with a sand shortage.

Years ago, in the early 90's, in those heady internet days, my buddy and I came up with the idea to sell Lucky Sand. We figured that being from Las Vegas there was plenty enough 'product'. Starting a business on the internet couldn't be that hard. We only needed a product and a marketing plan. During some nocturnal visits to the Las Vegas Strip we would scoop up sand where ever we could find it (surprisingly, it wasn't all that easy). Then we made some attractive labels, got a huge supply of little seal-able clear plastic bags, and some cinnamon (in case someone opened the bag). We sterilized the sand (didn't want any little bugs in it) and starting selling.
We actually sold about a dozen bags before we got bored of the whole venture. Internationally too! (Sold 3 bags to a guy in Germany, who was our biggest customer-and nicest).
I guess we should have hung onto all that sand we collected.
I still might have some. Anyone needing sand, let me know. For a small fee…

I remember hearing something back in the 70's when fifteen ships were trapped in the Suez Canal (in the Great Bitter Lake section) from 1967 to 1975 as a result of the Israel-Egypt Six-Day War. The ships were stuck rusting in the Bitter Lake, and they needed sand for the sand blasters to knock the rust off.

They had to have literally tons of sand shipped in, even though they were surrounded by dunes of sand, because the sand around them was too fine to work in the sand blasters.

@ Electric Wave – the same thing happened in Desert Shield/ Desert Storm. I remember filling sandbags with imported sand because the Arabian sand was too fine – almost like powder in some cases
