"After the young Turkish ruler, II. Mehmed conquered Constantinople in 1453, everyone knew that the next objective of the Sultan would be Hungary. Mehmed was the first to conquer the castle of Nándorfehérvár, since this fortress was considered the "key of Hungary". János Hunyadi, the most influential ruler of Hungary and the main military leader of the country, knew that he could not organize the defense of the country on his own merits, so he sought help from abroad. He got the Pope to announce a crusade led by John Kapistran. The Franciscan monk managed to recruit about thirty thousand crosses, but most of them were poorly equipped servants…." UT
