"James Fenimore Cooper wrote the novel The Last of the Mohicans in 1826. Then, many films were adapted from the material, including a famous 1920 adaptation from directors Clarence Brown and Maurice Tourneur, and a 1992 version from Michael Mann and star Daniel Day-Lewis. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it's coming to the screen again. This time, as an HBO Max television series.

The forthcoming The Last of the Mohicans series promises to be a reworking of the original premise, involving a star-crossed love story amidst the backdrop of the French-Indian War. The script will be co-written by Cary Joji Fukunaga (No Time to Die, True Detective) and Nick Osborne (Remember Me). Directing the project will be Nicole Kassell, who's worked on many acclaimed Damon Lindelof projects including Watchmen and The Leftovers. She's also directed celebrated TV shows like Better Call Saul and Westworld. The Last of the Mohicans was previously being developed as a limited series at FX in 2013, but the project stalled and is no longer moving forward…."

I wonder if they can make it better than the 1992 film?

clibinarium10 Jan 2020 6:30 a.m. PST

As long as its better than 1994's Hawkeye
YouTube link

which in fairness though not good, is by no means terrible.

I'd be shock if they can beat the 1992 film…that was a work of art.

Sigh. Pass. They have to 'rework' a classic….why?

Because every film ever made has virtually nothing to do with the original book. 1992 LotM is one of my favorite movies still.

I have to say that when I heard Michael Mann was doing the 1992 version I feared the worst. I based that judgement on Miami Vice and Manhunter – good in their own way but not costume dramas.
When I finally saw Last of the Mohicans I was blown away by it, still one of my all-time favourite films.

Then I tried to read the original book… don't!
It is almost unreadable. Fenimore Cooper does not believe in using one word when 12 or 15 will do, how they ever got a good script out of that book is beyond me!

More histerical (deliberate misspelling) TV for fetishists.

Historydude1807 Apr 2020 6:49 p.m. PST

Good. Hope it will be better than the 1992 movie.

It would be hard pressed to beat that movie.

The 1992 version of The Last of the Mohicans is a great action film, with excellent music. I listen to the sound track a couple times a week. It is a terrible rendition of the excellent JFC book.

I leaves out interesting characters and events, it mixes up the timeline, and most important messes up the romantic situation. Maybe necessary to get the ladies to enjoy the film. Cora is the older sister, and the strong one. Alice, younger and fragile and pursued by Duncan. Cora had an African grandmother, what we would call today, a person of color, so, in the time of Cooper, could have a relationship with a native American, be sought by another. Hawk-eye, in the book, follows his father's advice and does not get involved with either woman. Duncan in the end goes off with Alice and her father (he lives).

The book is very difficult to follow without close attention. When I tried to read it I gave up and got the Classics Illustrated version. Then I listened to it on Audible. I understood that Cooper was writing for people who were not saturated by graphic images -- tv, movies, Youtube, iPads. He had to describe the situation so readers could see it in their mind. You cannot describe the panorama of upstate New York, for example, with 1 word, you need 15, or many more. Listening to it, I found the rhythm of the story. I could imagine sitting by a fire, reading by candle light, perhaps out loud to the rest of the family, seeing the adventure unfold.

Listen to the book, Audible or books on disc. I "grows" on you. Watch the BBC version TV version for a better rendition of the story. Watch the Michael Mann version for lots of action and blood.

I've never read the book but it sounds like the film (itself a remake of an earlier version with Randolph Scott IIRC) was, in some ways, an improvement, just as the film The Men Who Would Be Kings is, IMHO, far more entertaining than the original Kipling story upon which it is based.

Well, this article was written in Jan of 2020. Four years later, anything?
h

The Hollywood Reporter, from which the link derives its content states:

"The new take is described as a retelling of Cooper's French and Indian War novel that focuses on the unlikely romance between Uncas, a young Mohican, and Cora, the mixed-race daughter of a British colonel."

There is a lot there that is not accurate compared to the 1992 movie or the original novel. We'll see.
