So I happened to be watching Ancient Aliens, which I do from time to time if nothing else grabs my interest. One of the things mentioned in this particular episode was a cave that supposedly exists in the Grand Canyon, that has evidence of a lost civilization, and contact with other cultures across the world. I went and googled it, and there seems to be a shred of truth to the story. Very Indiana Jones! link |

Make a good pulp scenario. |

Very definitely, maybe a whole campaign. |

Sounds like a good bet for a "Rugged Adventures" or "Call of Cthulhu" scenario. For a more likely skirmish/RPG adventure background (i.e., one with some historical validity) you might check out "America B.C." by Barry Fell. |

Some quick Google searching brought many links to versions of this story; it is evidently well-known and long standing. What is interesting to me is no coverage of this story considers the date is suspiciously close to one traditionally associated with practical jokes:
… curious article that appeared right on the front page of the April 5, 1909 edition of the Arizona Gazette, which gave a spectacular account from two alleged Smithsonian-funded archaeologists … |

I like AA and George Tsukalos. As the OP says, they can take a "shred of truth" like we found some caves with some stuff in it that is dissimilar from the stuff the people outside the caves over a thousand years later had and weave a beautiful story with it. It helps when you take one real life picture of the Grand Canyon, another real world picture of come underground something with no attribution and spice it up with some lovely fantasy art. This ie exactly the type of work you need to do to build a good, fun pulp scenario. The stuff there is somewhat like other stuff in Tibet and Egypt. I have some dust bunnies under my fridge that are like the constellation of Orion as seen from Alpha Centauri. I think it was ancient aliens. They been there for a long time. |
