I'm currently in the midst of a painting project for the 1790s Vendee Rebellion. I've got a bunch of Vendean rebel foot painted up and working on the Republican infantry now also. But I do want some cavalry for the Republicans, thought I would like some hussars since I read the Republicans did not use heavy cavalry in that closed terrain locale. What I can't find so far though is any uniform guides for some Revolutionary French hussars. Any wisdom from the hive out there? I'd appreciate it! |

Hi, In Vendée, there were few cavalry because of the rough nature of the terrain you already mentionned. In summer and fall 1793 the 8th, 9th and 11th hussars rgts were among them. Most of the other cavalrymen were gendarmes à cheval, Legion du Nord and chasseurs à cheval from the 14th and 15th rgts. There were also small detachments of dragoons and 100 to 150 'cavalerie nationale' men from the cities of Niort and Angouleme and the Haute-Vienne department but the uniforms of the latter I don't know. |

True. Right now I can't remember when the Legion arrived in Vendee but I think its 'career' is rather short. I think it is disbanded at the end of june after the battle of Saumur. Then the hussars joined the new 24th chasseurs à cheval which became the 11th hussars (28 july 1793). Not sure if they change their uniform. I forgot to mention them because I'm personnally focused on the period after the Mayençais' arrival (early september). |
