If you enjoyed Ep 7 and/or 8, you'll enjoy this one.

It's just as much a confused jumble of plot points that re-hash the original trilogy as Ep 7 and 8 were, with this one essentially revisiting Return of the Jedi.

And just like Ep 7 managed to invalidate all the struggle and sacrifice of Ep 4-6 by just resetting the board with a new Empire, new Rebellion (I mean *Resistance*), Han back to being a smuggler, and the last remaining Jedi hiding on a remote backwater, this movie effectively changes the whole story arc of the original movies (the Skywalker saga) into, well, a different family's drama.

So yeah, if you like PEW PEW! and lightsaber WOMMM WOMMM CRASH!, it does have some that.

My 10 year old son wants to see it, so I'll be taking him next week.

Yeah, the buzz isn't great. I'll see it, but my bar of expectation is lower than a Death Star trench.

At least The Mandalorian is enjoyable (and Verizon gave us a free year of Disney+, so for me it's free!).

Baby Yoda for the win.

I hated Episode 8 with all the passion I can muster. But you know what? I enjoyed Episode 9. Just saw it today, Based on the Uber negative buzz, I kept my expectations low, but overall I enjoyed it,

Characters had actual arcs, loose ends were tied, and stakes actually happened. Sure there were cringe worthy moments, but every Star Wars movie has had those. There was pew pew, nostalgia strings were pulled and none of the action made your head hurt trying to justify it.

One observation that might sound like a spoiler but isn't…. In the final scene, my devious mind couldn't help but think, ‘So Luke and Leia really did get together and had a kid? Ewww.' 😛 That might make sense if you see it.

It wasn't Shakespeare, but I honestly enjoyed it the most of the sequel trilogy.

I might do a more detailed spoiler review later.

Drat. I had hopes, too. Not high hopes, but hopes.

Even in print, good space opera is getting hard to find these days. Leigh Brackett said that its "dark trade in heroes" would outlast all the new Big Things but it doesn't feel that way any more.

I am a certified The Last Jedi hater and have to admit I really loved the Rise of Skywalker. Well worth watching. I'm going back.

McWong7321 Dec 2019 3:28 a.m. PST

I'm torn, it's not a bad film but I didn't like it all that much. Rey and Kylo were great, everything else was meh.

Munster21 Dec 2019 5:30 a.m. PST

I saw it today, you could probably edit out 80% of it and there was very little logic. Didn't mind the ending, but that was about it :(

StarCruiser21 Dec 2019 11:36 a.m. PST

I just can't justify rewarding Disney and Jar Jar Abrams by buying a ticket – not even one…

Bigby Wolf21 Dec 2019 4:44 p.m. PST

Haven't seen it yet, but I hear it's better than Cats, so … ,-)

ROS is everything TLJ isn't and hews closely to the spirit and nostalgia of the original trilogy. In many ways it's Disney's apology to all the SW fans for the travesty Episode 8 represented.

By catering to the fans who hated TLJ, ROS is currently rated 57 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Only the one starring Jar Jar Binks is worse.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP21 Dec 2019 6:56 p.m. PST

When Disney stops calling their critics racist misogynists, I will accept the apology. When they say something out loud, they should retract out loud.

> By catering to the fans who hated TLJ, ROS is currently rated 57 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Among critics – among the general audience it is holding steady at 86% approval.

> When Disney stops calling their critics racist misogynists

I think they will stop doing so when the Racist Misogynists stop being critical of films that have a non-white or non-heterosexual characters.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP22 Dec 2019 5:53 a.m. PST

Pay attention, Dynaman: you need "homophobic" which wasn't on my list. Racist mysogynists would object to non-white or non-male characters, like Leia and Londo.

Dynaman878922 Dec 2019 7:34 a.m. PST

I do pay attention. I read quite a few homophobic/racist rants against the Last jedi. Leia being female or Lando (Londo is B5) doesn't change that.

I'm not saying Last Jedi was a good movie mind you – it was terrible.

The Beast Rampant22 Dec 2019 9:10 a.m. PST

The arrogance and stupidity displayed by Disney and their flunkeys regarding the atrocious Ep 8 was inexcusable. It will be a cold day in hell before they see a cent from me regarding the caboose of this train wreck.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik22 Dec 2019 10:21 a.m. PST

Among critics – among the general audience it is holding steady at 86% approval.

Few films had as wide a gap between critics and audience scores as Episodes 8 and 9. TLJ has a 91% score from the critics but only 43% from the audience.

Like Abrams said, you can't please everybody. Since moviegoers are the ones paying for the tickets, he was wise to take the "fan service" route and not get too creative.

The Beast Rampant22 Dec 2019 11:57 a.m. PST

So I'm guessing that they actually realized that taking the "subverting expectations" route with a cherished and time-honored IP didn't work so well last time?

Dynaman878922 Dec 2019 1:45 p.m. PST

It did work the time before that "I am your father" is known world wide now. The problem is subverting expectations without making everyone a total moron.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP23 Dec 2019 5:28 a.m. PST

Ideally, it works like a good mystery: when the big twist comes, it seems obvious--but only in retrospect. That's not easy.

Bigby Wolf23 Dec 2019 1:32 p.m. PST

Got round to seeing it this afternoon, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Except for a couple of mouth-breathers chomping on probably the loudest chips I've ever heard.

Really looking forward to rewatching it at home TBH.

Thresher0123 Dec 2019 3:17 p.m. PST

Haven't seen 8 yet. It'll be on TV on the 29th for free, so will watch it then.

Haven't liked much since the first trilogy, other than the funny, old era, talking droid soldiers from the Empire, which are a hoot.

I did love the Episode IV prequel, Rogue One too. One of the best movies of the whole series, in my opinion, since it is more true to A New Hope's storyline.

Son saw it and said it was okay, perhaps better than some.

The review I saw mentioned on TV said this one is the worst of the lot of 9 – 10 movies, so, we'll see, eventually, for free I imagine, years from now, if/when it is shown on TV for free as well. Doubt I'll buy a ticket.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa03 Jan 2020 10:38 a.m. PST

Finally got to see it last weekend. Actually quite good – some duff bits and quite a bit of fudging as result of the previous film and its director, as well as Abrams having to tidy up some of his own mess from the Episode 7! Actually felt like a Star Wars movie. My eleven year 'target audience sample' liked it – six year old fell asleep halfway through – but don't take that as a commentary on the film.

Will have to see if I can catch up with the Mandalorian.

Can't quite believe the rumour that Disney's next foray into Star Wars will be set in a completely new galaxy rather than say hitting the Old Republic, which they're going to do after the 'new galaxy'!
