I often find myself loving a new game that is released but am in the midst of a project, or life is in the way and by the time I get around to joining the party, all the cool kids have either gotten tired of that game or moved on to the bright new shiny. I'd love to dive into Gaslands, Cruel Seas and Black Seas amongst several newish games but know that it will be a year plus before I do. Heck, I'm still planning to get into Lion Rampant and that's years old now. Do you ever find yourself in the same boat? To combat this, I try to sate my interest by playing new games I'm interested in at shows, but there are only so many I can attend. |

all the time. I learned a long time ago, that there is more to do in this hobby than i will ever have the time, energy or funds to accomplish. It's good to realize this and do what you can and be happy with what you can. The shows is a good way i think to experience it without a year+ investment to get ready for a game….. |

I came to a crisis when I retired, moved home and contemplated the size of the mess I'd created. Now there is a list of armies--by period, scale, basing and what it would take for them to be complete. "Club" projects were donated to the group, and everything else is being sold off by the footlocker. If someone wants to show me a new set of rules for the existing lead, that's fine. I'm using Lion Rampant, for instance, instead of "Retinue" or "Rules by Ral." But anyone wanting me to start a complete fresh period/scale is too late to MY party. |

I am interested in too many things to worry about what is popular at any particular point in time. |

It could be a good thing. If the games is still there all well and good. Expert players all stuff released. If it was a flash in the pan and has disappeared, then you saved money. |

I'm with GunnerPhil. I like to wait to see if it sticks around a bit before diving in. In fact our group watches all the new stuff & we guess how long it will be around before it died. A hobby into itself. |

I am the Party. I pay very little attention to popularity of game or period. I do what I want, with the expectation that I'm providing all the figures, terrain, etc for any game I run. |
Stosstruppen | 16 Dec 2019 10:15 a.m. PST |
yep it was like that with my buddies in California. By the time I got on board with something they had moved on. |
ColCampbell | 16 Dec 2019 10:28 a.m. PST |
No, I'm too set in my ways and getting too old to worry about the "new" thing. I've still got too many figures to paint that are organized for my go-to rules that it would be insanity to start something new, just because it is "new." Jim |

I'm with ColCampbell, that said I am looking forward to the new release of TSATF! |

Another with the Colonel on this views. The Cool Kids left me behind some time ago but, with much good fortune, there are some other Grognards that will have me as a gaming companion. |

Yes, from time to time, assuming I even get an invite. |
raylev3 | 16 Dec 2019 2:28 p.m. PST |
Quit trying to keep up with the latest fad. Pick a set of rules, or two, that you really like, and maybe a set that a couple of your buddies like, too, and stick with those. |

Your premise is flawed, there is no real party until you show up.

Late, hell, by the time I usually get there everyone has gone home!! |
Doctor X | 16 Dec 2019 11:32 p.m. PST |
In my group, I am the party. I paint up well painted figures for all sides, provide quality terrain, fairly large dedicated gaming room, selection of rules to play, and coordinate the gaming dates. There are two others who provide help on all the above but in general, if I didn't do it, the game wouldn't happen. I don't mind and it seems to work out for everyone so win-win. |

I usually don't get interested in something until it's several years out of print…….I enjoy a good challenge! |

Happens. Two of us wanted to get into gaslands and now got in on the second edition rules. Waited just long enough. Assuming we get a few games in… |

Well, I was some thirty years late getting into the Fletcher Pratt rules … |

Heck, I'm still planning to get into Lion Rampant and that's years old now. Me too, but worse: I even have house rules for Lion Rampant, yet no figures for it. - Ix |

I'm a pretty slow painter/crafter/collector, so it's easy to be late to the party. I've never been much of a trend-follower. The miniatures gaming community is full of squirrels who will jump into every new game system, but I only occasionally play in one, if something about it caught my eye. I rarely replace a set of rules I enjoy playing with something new, but once in a great while I do. It took me a couple years to get around to playing Regimental Fire & Fury (the local gamers practically had to drag me into it), but it has become my go-to default system for just about all horse & musket gaming. Once in a while, I'm actually looking for rules to do something specific, and then I do get interested in investigating as many rules for the period/setting as I can find. I think the harder issue for me is letting go of miniatures I worked hard to build up, but just don't play with anymore. I wouldn't want to have to build a collection again. - Ix |

I don't mind picking up new rules and giving them a good look. It doesn't mean I'll automatically give up on my current preferences. The need to be on the cutting edge of every new development in this hobby is just part of the relatively new social mania of FOMO. (Fear of Missing Out). I think the inability to jump onto the newest thing because you have a lot of finishing up to do with existing projects is a healthy situation. And the party is your own. Enjoy it your way. |
