Starts tomorrow Tuesday 17th 9pm. Docudrama from the same team who brought us Charles 1: Downfall of a King. Presented by Lisa Hilton who will no doubt spend all three episodes trying to be absolutely fabulously gorgeous. Many will probably disagree.

Hopefully better than Downfall of a King. Fingers crossed

I thought "Downfall of a King" was really good, so if "Killing of a King" is better I'll be delighted.

I thought Downfall was okay, a bit thin at times, but mainly spoiled by the presenter – who was trying to outdo Alice Roberts, Joanna Liptrot and Bettany Hughes.

I'm aware that many of the historians who advised on this (unpaid!) pulled out once the producers made it clear that the programme would show it as it 'ought' to have been rather than how the historical record shows it was. Don't get your hopes too high, I fear…

"The Tyrannicide Brief" is an excellent book if you would like to know about the King's prosecutor, his methods and how they contributed to the modern prosecution of criminals like Pinochet etc.

Okay, this might be hijacking a thread but why oh why does the BBC continue to retell the same select historical events generation after generation? British history (not to mention the rest of the world they interacted with) has so much more to give.

Because as a nation we all love our Queen, gawd bless 'er (apparently). Since the Restoration, the Civil Wars have been seen as a shameful period in our history (because the king lost his head).
There's a lot to be ashamed of in British history, regecide isn't really one of them

Personally, I don't regard the Civil Wars as 'a shameful period in our history'. Sad, regrettable, unpleasant for those involved or affected by them, but not shameful.

I wouldn't agree with ‘shameful' either: otherwise, we wouldn't have a statue of Cromwell outside the Houses of Parliament, I am sure.

And most British gamers I've met are readily able to declare for King or Parliament, with a pretty even split between the two.

So what is it with all of these beautiful, British historians? None like that on this side of the pond.

For every Suzannah Lipscomb there's at least 2 David Starkeys, believe me !
