All,
Where can I find reasonably inexpensive prehistoric mammals? Meaning Mammoth, Sabertooth tiger, Wolves, Bears etc? For 28mm.

Interesting. I wonder how they look with 28mm minis?

My two mammoths were Christmas tree decorations bought at Hobby Lobby several years ago. I haven't seen them since, though.

Check Hobby lobby in the children project section. They have a tub of mammals. Also several companies did Mammoths as plastic toys that are sold at natural History Museums.

I started with plastic one and moved on tto metal/Resin ones.

Also one of the japanese collection candy toys did Mammals.

Deezee miniatures from Arcane Scenery have prehistoric mammals. Recreational conflict in the US has them.

I'll second Acheson and Deezee. Both are extensive ranges and not huge wallet busters.

Wackamole9 put on this game at our club (Colorado Military Historians). It was a very entertaining game.
Thanks, Bill!!

Job one is going to be establishing scale. Most of the caveman'y types I've seen (since Steve Barbers switchover from 25 to 28mm) are beefy 28s bordering on 30s.

Decide to your own satisfaction how large the animals should be to the human scale, 15' tall maybe, then scale out how big a model you want. I tried ordering Japanese toy Mammoths and they were way too small. Schleich toys are beautiful, but generally way too big. Search for models that jibe to your size expectations, then buy!

If you come to the HMGS cons, visit the guys who carry Iron Wind now. They have a by weight animals bin. They carry bison (not exactly correct for PH, but if you squint a little…) and an awesome Cave Lion. Also I think river bank Gators. Lots of contemporary critters as well. . Worth a look.

This will all likely be more $, but you'll be happier with the result.

If you're a caveman rivet counter be aware that many animal lines contain animals from different continents. I wanted to do Ice Age Europe and got some Glyptodons, only to find out they were South American.

All that being said, DeeZee and Acheson are superb places to start. I bought the full 3 Mammoth offerings from DeeZee Recreational Conflict last spring.

Have fun!

Here's a picture of the resin Kurt Adler mammoth I bought from Hobby Lobby: link It isn't quite large enough to be a big North American Columbian mammoth. It does quite nicely as a smaller species, like the woolly mammoth, though. If you find any, they look good enough to pass as an individual mammoth, or they could be used to bulk out a herd of mammoths from other, more expensive manufacturers.
