I've got to agree that I've never seen rules that do manipular combat well. On the other hand, I don't have a manipular Roman army, so I haven't been motivated read every possible rule set. It strikes me that a lot of the advantage the organization gave the Romans was that they were able to bring up fresh troops, while pulling tired troops back to rest. Perhaps some sort of first round advantage against the tired enemy would be in order, especially if it could be renewed after a turn or two of rest. Grelber |

What maybe needed is some kind of universal gestalt of unit formations. The Romans' enemies might find it more difficult to achieve a coherent 'figure' with their lumpen, tribal/retinue organisations in comparison to ease that the Romans can achieve with their handfuls. |
