"As Americans, we like to think of our military as defending freedom and saving the world from evildoers, whether they be Nazis or terrorists. We tend to think of ourselves as "the good guys."

Consequently, it's interesting – every once and a while – to look at some of our American wars through the perspective of our enemies: The Germans and Japanese in the Second World War, and Russia.

What follows are the top war films shown from the enemy's perspective – some of these are Hollywood films which simply took a chance, others are foreign war movies that were made overseas and just developed a following in the United States…"

Funny it seems most of the post-WW II movies from Hollywood are thru the eyes of our enemies.

Again, invoking the 10 year rule here.

Jane Fonda anyone?

I think VC has it right for at least some portion of the movies. Not sure it is "most" though.

Hollywood considers it un-pc to make "propaganda movies" like those from the '40s and '50's in which Americans are always the good guys who can do no wrong and the enemy are cookie-cutter faceless bad guys who are not only fanatical and stupid but can't hit a target the size of a barn door. Society in general had become cynical of flag-waving jingo-ism in cinema since America's bitter experience in Vietnam. Though to be fair we still see them every so often in films like SPR, Fury, Blackhawk Down, American Sniper and the recent remake of Midway.

Another interesting (if imperfect) movie from the enemy's perspective not mentioned on the list is 'My Way,' a South Korean production about a couple of Koreans who, through a continuous series of unfortunate but true events, ended up seconded to the Wehrmacht defending the Normandy beaches against the American invasion in '44 after getting overrun by the Russians at Khalkhyn Gol in '39! You have to see it to believe it.

I understand there is a whole Viet film industry, with a very different take on the late unpleasantness.

And Hollywood is happy to make propaganda movies: they just have a different notion of who the good guys are.

Again one man's good guy is another's bad guy. Do you think ISIS, the Taliban, AQ, etc. think they are the bad guys ? I don't think so …

Obviously any such list is highly personal and it is indeed odd to see Enemy at the Gates considered from the Enemy's perspective.

But leaving out Stalingrad (the German version with subtitles) is a surprise

I did like Enemy at the Gate, both the book & movie.

And yes Mark, there may not be a Santa Claus … but there are still bad guys … lots of them ! evil grin
