Before the Federation, and, more to the point, the Interstellar Convention on Naval and Maritime Vessel Architecture, ships had their anti-matter thrusters on the stern, like this ship, where they could push through the center of mass, and didn't need megajoules of force fields compensating for the hypertorque effects of nacelles attached to the ships with flimsy support struts!

But you tell kids that and they just laugh say that you're so two centuries ago!
