I'm just starting to get in to 40k and bought 8th edition codexes off eBay. Now I find out they've been updated by 8th edition 2.0(Why isn't that 9th edition?) anyway I'm not buying new codexes, but if I buy the latest data cards with latest strategums on, will that bring me up to date ? (I use BattleScribe to print reference sheets so I don't care if the stats have changed). I only play against my son anyway, but the new stuff sounds cool. ( we play chaos vs ultramarines.. and some dark angels.. and wolves and anything we buy off eBay). In fact if we use battlescribe and data cards, are the codexes unnecessary ?

If it's just the 2 of you playing and you enjoy the rules – I would use BS army builder and the codices you already have …
