Can anyone help me in working out what ship classes the Langton Russian NR5 50 gun (2-deck) and NR6 44/46 gun (2-deck) represent? I know the Russians had both small 2-decker line of battle ships and frigates but apart from 1 later razee, these seem to have disappeared before the Napoleonic period. Any thoughts? |

you could try buying this Russian Warships in the Age of Sail – 1696 – 1860 – Design construction careers and fates by John Tredrea and Eduard Sozaev |

By coincidence, those are the 2 main sources I have already looked at and couldn't find the info. Does anyone have either of these models? The length might help narrow things down. |

I have both of the miniatures, and I also have the Tredea/Sozaev book. After doing some research, I think the NR5 model is supposed to represent the 54 gun frigate Krepkii [Strong]. There seem to be no pictures of that ship available, but it is a sister to the Baltic fleet ship Skory [Fast]. The 46-gun frigates were out of service by about 1800-1801. However, I think the Langtons designed that 46 gun frigate miniature to also represent the single deck 50 gun frigates like Grigorii Velikiia Armenii [Gregory the Great of Armenia]. I did a blog entry about these very same models. You can find it at: link |

Glad to be of assistance, sir! That blog post is there because I asked myself the exact same questions about those ships. |

Well, I've ordered some so I might ask Rod the question and see what he says! |

Hmmmm. You know, I never thought of that. 😬 If you do, please come back here and tell us what he said! I will be more than happy to adjust the blog post with new information. |

I got a response back that they are representative vessels and not based exactly on any particular class but your estimations are as good as any. I'll measure them when they arrive and see if we can get a scale length and see how that compares to the historical classes. |

Excellent. Now that we have the word from them, I will go and update the post. Thanks! |

OK, ships have arrived at Langton's usual faster-than-light speed. I've measured them and my thoughts are : NR5 50 gun (2-deck) scales up to 161 feet on the gundeck, and allowing for minor errors in measuring represents Grigorii Velikia Armenii and Sviatoi Mikhail very well. NR6 44/46 gun (2-deck) scales up to 147 feet and would represent the Pyotr Apostol class (6 ships), Voznesenie Gospodne and Sviatoi Nikolai. Using the earlier interpretations is equally valid but Krepkii was a monster at 176 feet and I have NR1 (the 66 gun) measuring the same as NR5 and although Krepkii was based on a 62 gun 3rd Rate this might make her look out of sync. Anyway, these are just my thoughts and we have the words of the Gospel of St.Rod as reported earlier. |
