All,

I just received a large batch of Tin Man Miniatures to go with my older Bronze Age figures that have been hiding in the closet for far too long.

I sat down to do some prep work and realized that I had no idea how I was going to paint the (lots of) skin on the Red Martians.

Anyone have a good recipe?

I did an army in 18mm that turned out well. Priming with colored primer was new for me, but worked well.

Prime with Army Painter Barbarian Flesh spray primer.
Highlight Reaper Rosy Flesh
Wash with mix of 1 part Army Painter Dark Shade and 2 parts Army Painter Red Shade.

That was it. Lots of shading and depth, without being too dark.

I've painted several Red Martians for my John Carter games & Reaper's Pro Paint "Sunburn Flesh" straight out of the bottle works for me.

I've use Brick Red with mine and have been satisfied with the results.

I generally use a standard flesh paint like Reaper Rosy Flesh. Then I apply a red wash.

I'm not a shading and mixing painter, so I'd use a brick red, or a Howard Hues Native American flesh straight out of the bottle.

Thanks for the ideas. Lots of options to ponder…

You could also look for a tutorial to paint "red skinned" Native Americans. I think ERB described Martians thinking of those indians.

I used Howard Hues Native American flesh for my 15mm Peter Pig Red Martians. You get a slightly different colour depending upon the undercoat you use. The ones I did a few years ago are a little darker because I used a black undercoat. The ones I did this year are slightly paler because I used an almost white primer. I am pleased with the variation because I seem to remember that there was some variation of complexion in the books.
