….FAMAS Can Kill

"Forty years ago, the French Army adopted a new assault rifle that catapulted the country's infantry from the rear to the forefront of small arms technology. The Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne, or FAMAS assault rifle replaced antiquated rifles and submachine guns in French service with a fully modern weapon. Short and compact, the FAMAS was a good fit for both France's European and colonial military responsibilities…."

If the fit hit the shan I'd still rely on my AK over anything else.

A weapon is only as good as the trooper/crew behind it.

It's one of the ugliest rifles ever designed.

The FAMAS is so grest – the French are replacing it:

The French FAMAS rifle has been a disaster. Its delayed blowback action is powerful enough to rip apart regular NATO brass-cased 5.56x45mm cases and its rifling does not stabilize the modern 5.56mm NATO bullets. The French Army is forced to use steel cased 5.56mm ammunition, thus eliminating the advantages of using the same cartridge as their NATO and EU allies. It that was not bad enough, the ammunition is no longer made in France and has be imported. A French journalist told me that China manufactures steel-cased 5.56mm for French military (I will say that another French journalist I spoke to disputes that ammunition is imported from China).

The FFL is replacing it too:

Has anyone ever fired a FAMAS that can give a personal evaluation? This guy shows some cool fearures:

I do like the Bullpup design. You still have a long(er) barrel but the weapon itself is shorter. Much easier to maneuver in tight places, e.g. vehicles, buildings, etc.

The grenade launcher and bipod are great additions. It has a short sight base needing optical sights. From what I've been told the M4 with the ACOG is not the greatest for room clearing operations so probably the same with a bullpup optical sight but the shorter barrel is a plus.

I've held a Tovar (ambidextrous) and Steyer Aug and they felt kind of funky. My son has fired the Styer Aug with the NZ Army and didn't particularly like it but he never really had a chance to get used to it.

Bullpups have other issues too which may account for their lack of popularity:

I think the Tovar has overcome some of these issues.
