Hi all, im trying to paint up a Moroccan unit (II tabor of Tetuan) but am finding conflicting sources on which sash color each Moroccan group wore. Minairons painting guide says melilla wore red, tetuan blue Steves balagan says Tetuan no. 1 Red, Melilla no. 2 Blue Patrick turnbull agrees with Steve. Im not seeing any references to differrnt sash colors by group in other guides. I guess im leaning toward the majority opinion, though Steve could have just read Turnbull! |

I just did whatever the Osprey said (which I think is the same as Steves). In my experience very few players pick the Moroccans up and citicise the sash colours, they are usually just excited to have such colourful troops. |

From what I understand, the sash color was red or/and the base color of the unit [flag]. |

Bueno's "Uniformes Militares de la Guerra Civil Española" has the following: Tetuan – blue Melilla – red Ceuta – green Larache – dark blue Alhucemas – dark red That's in the 1997 revised edition pg. 26, plate 29 however I think the confusion arises from the original 1971 edition having Tetuan with red and Melilla with blue (pg 151) which was widely reproduced in English language sources until the revision. |

Accordingly to my own painting guides, colours are the following: SASH Melilla Group – Red Tetouan Group – Dark Blue Ceuta Group – Green Larache Group – Blue Alhucemas Group – Saffron GAITERS Ceuta Group – Green All the rest – Blue Lluís Vilalta minairons.eu |

As for the different colours for the Alhucemas Group, I have a crazy little theory about that. Perhaps Bueno was confused over the meaning of saffron? Saffron spice derived from the saffron crocus is in fact dark red or crimson. However the colour "saffron" is orange-yellow and comes from the colour of the tip of the flower's thread. It's also the traditional colour of the robes of some sects of Buddhist monks. Either way an image search came up with this:
