I have a copy of this and wondering who in their right mind would pay $140 USD for them?

Check your shelves, you may be rich! :)

But this may be the most reasonable of the rules being offered. Check out the prices on some of the other items they are selling.

I buy armies for $140 USD, not rules. But you're right: obviously I have a fortune out in the garage. Funny how I have a hard time getting $5 USD for them at HMGS flea markets.

Maybe it's aimed at the collector rather than the practical gamer. The rules were originally released in 1975 by TSR (of D&D fame) so count as an "antique collectible" like 1st Edition D&D books.

Still, I wouldn't pay even $10 USD for it personally. The fact that it may be the very first set of rules ever published for miniature tank vs. tank battles on the tabletop means nothing to me.

I see these listed all the time but I never see any bids.

Twilight Samurai15 Nov 2019 9:47 p.m. PST

I imagine it's got that "antique" smell too.

You are only rich if you find someone who would pay this price.
The value on an unaccepted offer is $0. USD

I expect he has a really good sense of humour?
Did give us all a laugh after all.

Man, I had those. Had no real interest in playing it after reading it. Wish I'd held onto it for $140. USD

Mike Petro16 Nov 2019 12:41 p.m. PST

And they sold.

They did, but for how much? It was a best offer deal so we don't know.

Many sellers throw a stupid number out there on best offers to try and set a higher final selling price in the buyers mind than what the items market value is.

They hope to get someone to settle in the middle, which is usually still a stupid price.

I've bought from sellers who do this and they have accepted my offer even when it has been 10-15% of what they were originally asking.

Keep in mind these are old TSR rules and there are TSR collectors out there that will pay insane prices just to have the object that says TSR on it.

No longer available does not mean sold. They'll be back, just watch…

The only set of tan warfare rules which would be close to that price is a 1980s copy of the original Tank Charts with all of the card stock firing chart and vehicle supplements. In addition to the main set of rules, each nationality ran $15 USD to $20 USD each back then. There were also supplements covering most combat areas.

"…The rules were originally released in 1975 by TSR… it may be the very first set of rules ever published for miniature tank vs. tank battles on the tabletop…"

Not even close-- my 2nd Edition "Chainmail" (copyrighted 1972) has an ad page in the back that already lists both "Tractics" ($7.50) and "Fast Rules" ($ .75) for sale.

HUBCommish17 Nov 2019 10:34 p.m. PST

I sold a copy in 2018 for $45 USD, if that's any indication of the going rate.

Uparmored20 Nov 2019 1:02 a.m. PST

I would pay $45 USD for those. Nice set of rules from when stuff meant something.

Mobius20 Nov 2019 6:34 a.m. PST

The complete set of armor rules "Men-in-Armor" would have a hefty price. It comes with a core set for maybe $15 USD to $20. USD The additional packs of 6-10 tank charts for $6 USD-$8 each. I never picked it up because I would have to spend $80 USD or more to get the sets I needed.

Wolfhag20 Nov 2019 12:27 p.m. PST

I have a scanned document of "Men-in-Armor" six pages of rules if anyone wants a copy.

email me at treadheadgames AT g m a i l DOT com

I have the data cards around somewhere, I'll have to find them.

Wolfhag, while M-i-A is very interesting we had a campaign (our campaign master had a complete set) using them. But, apparently the author only play-tested with a few people one of them being Brian Stokes of Tank Charts fame. We found a few strange anomalies in the rule mechanics. One of them being is depending on range the location in a 10 by 10 grid hit location can be corrected if it is a miss so as to hit the almost invulnerable front-side turret plate.

We reported this to the author who suggested instead of a fixed corrected location we should roll the location again and again until we hit a random tank location. The game was slow enough already.

Wolfhag26 Nov 2019 9:11 a.m. PST

Mobius,
I never had the chance to play the game much but I thought it was a step in the right direction. There are better ways to reflect the rules now.

Yes, he has listed this before with no takers. Can't imagine why not. I mean granted it isnt a first edition, has the owners name in red marker prominent on the front and apparently back covers, has writing in it, staples starting to rust and spine discolored. Nearly mint! :)
