The Battle of Quatre Bras 16th June 1815

Timeline 5.50PM

Overview.

The French 5th Infantry Division, Lieutenant-General Baron Gilbert-Desiree Bachelu and French 9th Infantry Division Lieutenant-General Maximillian-Sebastian, Comte Foy are heavily engaged with the Allied centre and left wing. This massive assault is causing the Duke grave concern.

Meanwhile, 2nd French Infantry Brigade, Marechal-de-camp Baron Jean-Louis Soye, from Jerome Bonaparte's 6th French Infantry Division. continues its remorseless advance on the Allied centre.

The Brunswick hussars, Major Frederich von Cramm commanding, have charged the French infantry between the Bois de Bossu and Ferme La Bergerie and despite suffering heavy casualties on the approach are engaged in a melee.

Unfortunately, the British artillery is severely handicapped in target acquisition by undulating terrain and the tall crops. Nevertheless, No2 Company Royal Artillery Brevet Major Thomas Rogers has redeployed to assist the Allied centre.

His Grace, The Duke of Wellington has received news that 3rd British Infantry Division, Lieutenant-General Count Carl von Alten is approaching Quatre Bras, but, will it be soon enough?

To add to the Duke's woes, Lieutenant-General Francois-Etienne-Kellerman Comte Valmy is proudly leading the cuirassiers of French 2nd Cavalry Brigade straight at the Allied centre.

Marechal Ney senses victory is at hand. 'Avant, la victoire est a nous, mes braves'.

Apologies.

The timeline should read 4.50 PM.

Fat fingers getting in the way.

Chris

Never mind the fat fingers, those pictures are fabulous!

Well done Chris, as ever, this is remarkable stuff. You fit in so much. I'm beginning to run short of casualty figures. How do you generate enough?

Boney had no problem with generating so many casualty figures, why should this genius?

Actually you make a very good point. Dead anyone can do, these pictures are packed with figures who clearly are still thrashing about, for now anyway. Clever figure modifications I suspect. I enjoy the limb swapping much more than the painting!

thomaspicton16 Nov 2019 2:37 a.m. PST

Figure bending with hot water (for plastics) and limb exchanges certainly works, but I need a mass source or my Hougoumont project will soon exhaust supplies!

Hi James.

Mr D is right about the ‘dying' wounded guys. I would suggest that the wounded element is probably about three/ four to every immediately dead guy in this era.

Art Minituran used to do lots of dead and wounded.

Some are still produced.

Schilling have lots of various wounded/ dead.

Ykerol are morbid but great if you carve them off the bases. Watch our for your fingers though.

Lots of crawling guys are useful when bent, chopped etc.

Hagen are good for ACW casualties which can be converted. Good value too.

As you know Speira are lovely with a definite emphasis on the dying/death element.

Unfortunately the Speria items are very expensive pro rata and the postage is crippling.

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks Chris, I'm on to all those – I think I need to make some moulds and then produce on the grand scale.

Awesome! Your massed figures are spectacular, but I am especially impressed with how real your terrain looks.

CM Dodson-
I've been watching you post these pictures for years. Clearly, what you're doing is some of the best, most dedicated model diorama making in history.
I have been wondering, how do you make these things? Do you re-use figures and terrain? Or are you in a warehouse somewhere slowly filling in a square kilometer with 20mm Belgian countryside? I like the idea of the latter, I can't lie.

Thank you for your kind comments, they are very much appreciated.

The location is my garage, much to my wonderful wife's frustration.

The table is a sand table which makes realistic terrain a joy.

The Quatre Bras project which is still ongoing is outlined here..

I hope that you will find them informative.

I am currently wargaming the next move and then it's photography time again.

Best wishes,

Chris
