… Bone Marrow Like Canned Soup 400,000 Years Ago. "Tel Aviv University researchers, in collaboration with scholars from Spain, have uncovered evidence of the storage and delayed consumption of animal bone marrow at Qesem Cave near Tel Aviv, the site of many major discoveries from the late Lower Paleolithic period some 400,000 years ago. The news is that you can store marrow in the bones for two months without getting food poisoning. That is suprising. Personally, I extracted two chicken's worth of marrow yesterday, along with all their collagen and other goodness, through the wonderful medium of stock from an Instant Pot. But they didn't have pressure cookers in the Paleolithic so they wrapped the bones in skin and put them in caves. That was my second choice but we have an instant pot. They only mention tapping in to the stored food "in times of need", but the other use for what one of my professors called "portable potable protein" is expeditions – military or migratory. A stash of bones like this means you can take a couple weeks off hunting to travel, raid, explore, or trade. |
