I am about to post many, many pictures on this thread so please refrain from posting comments for continuity's sake. I will indicate the end of the postings with the French word FIN (END) I will start with the Regular Infantry and cavalry. So! Here's what I have. REGIMENTS OF FOOT

I used pictures of Russian and Prussian generals as inspiration for their figures, this would be a treasure trove of British officers it took me lots of searching to do. |

Now the controversial cavalry which are in no particular order of regiments:

I will say 'FIN' here as I'm fatigued.I'll post all the other pictures of the volunteers, schematics, and tables later. Feel free to question as Senneff did on the other thread. I do so like to banter and argue about the most controversial aspects of the British soldiers uniform and kit, a subject that's full of mystery :D |

Before I post the Militia, Yeomanry and Volunteer pictures, I thought that I would post the C.Marcuard Schematics. In case you have never heard of Marcuard, he was with the Quartermaster General's department and commissioned to make these charts in 1819 thus the new type of headwear and the inclusion of Lancer Regiments, etc in his illustrations.

here are 77 of a set 0f 87 illustrations by Thomas Rowlandson for the book called 'Loyal Volunteers of London & Environs, Infantry & Cavalry in their Respective Uniforms. Representing the whole of the Manual, Platoon, & Funeral Excercise, in 87 Plates' I am looking for the 10 that remain which are numbers 5 7 13 19 24 25 29 40 67 and 76. Anyone got them perchance?

Some years ago, Steven Smith made a compilation of links: link The Middlesex cavalry missing there is here:
And Depotford cavalry, one of the images seems to have heavily faded:
I found these two by a simple Google images search, entering the title of the plate. Maybe that is a way to find also the missing infantry plates ? |
dibble | 28 Oct 2019 12:34 a.m. PST |
I have Posted those two at the beginning along with the title page. I have omitted No.2 the Surrey Yeomanry which on reflection I should not have done because I am including it in the Militia and Yeomanry post that I'll be posting later The names of the missing plates are as follows: 5. St. Mary Le Strand and Somerset House Volunteers. 7. St. Clement Danes Volunteers. 13. Cornhill Association. 19. Royal Westminster Light Infantry. 25. Bishopsgate Volunteers. 29. Castle Baynard Volunteers. 40. St. Margaret and St. John Westminster Volunteers. 67. Christ-Church 'surrey' Association. 76. Dowgate Ward Volunteers. believe me when I say that I have checked on the internet but have had little success. Thanks for your input though :) PS. I listed as missing No.24 East India Company volunteers which is incorrect. |

#35 Chelsea Volunteer – Blue is the Colour! |
Oliver Schmidt | 28 Oct 2019 3:43 a.m. PST |
There is a very short but nice article about Rowlandson's Loyal Volunteers, giving all the three variations of plate 7 (St. Clement Danes Volunteer). Unfortunately, only in black and white: jstor.org/stable/44229415 (you have to register – for free – in order to read the article) |
Oliver Schmidt | 28 Oct 2019 5:11 a.m. PST |
A son of Tell sent me this link with a coloured version of plate 7: St. Clement Danes Volunteer: link And there is another article at JSTOR, with plate 13: jstor.org/stable/44227519 |
dibble | 28 Oct 2019 2:06 p.m. PST |
Thanks very much for the links, Oliver. I downloaded all of them because I also keep different examples. The St Clement Danes plate is another one scratched off. :) I have seen the JSTOR link, I subscribe to their quarterly journal which is a must for anyone interested in the british army |

just to let you know Oliver that I have edited the picture of the St. Clements Danes Plate and this is the result From this:

I will direct anyone who is interested in the Militia and Yeomanry regiments of the period to this excellent site. even though it seems to only cover specific units from the Midlands and the North of England, it is still a very interesting site indeed
link This is the last of my downloads pertaining uniforms. My next will be the de Bosset, Hamilton-Smith, Pearse and my charts. FIN |

This is the last of my postings. I know that to view this thread takes ages to view due to the amount of pictures and it can be annoying, but please peruse and be free to pull me up on things. I know there are some pictures that may be controversial to some of you and it would be great to be able to discuss them with you :) Pictures like this one:
Which was posted on the net like this and I have posted it above in the 11th light Dragoons posting but I forgot to reverse and post it like this…
As can be seen, it was posted in its mirror image and should have been posted this way around |

A prodigious work of scholarship for which we are all in your debt. I cannot imagine how long it must have taken to assemble these, and how on earth you did it….Sale catalogues? Visiting every museum in the country ? Doubtless all those and more. Profound Thanks. I have only one regret : I would like to Save some of them , if you don't object , but I find that i can't open the webp format. Presumably there is a way? |
dibble | 30 Oct 2019 12:54 a.m. PST |
So, can't you just right click on the picture and 'Save As'? I also posted these on Pinterest. link Anyone can upload what I post. Indeed, I do it for no other reason than to further the Military History, Modelling and wargaming communities database and knowledge. If it makes one person's life easier in tracking down information posted by me, then that's 'job done' as far as I'm concerned. I suffered great frustration with a lack of decent information when I was a wargamer/ Military figure painter back in the 70s-80s and 90s. To me, no information was good enough unless the sources were contemporary and back in the day it was bloody hard to get such information and one had to rely on what authors pumped out. Suffice to say that I got disheartened with wargaming and packed it all in, in the mid-80s and stopped figure painting at the end of the 90s. They were great hobbies that not only gave one a good grasp of history but also kept one out of trouble. But I suppose that I was too much of a button counter and sticker for accuracy that in the end, it consumed my 'hands-on' interest. So, If you can manage to download, 'fill your boots' :) |

Nitpick: with the 56th Regiment isn't the shako a centre company item? If it were light the plume would be green over red, no? |
42flanker | 18 Oct 2020 11:45 a.m. PST |
Solid green would be the regulation light coy feather – unless the 56th had a better idea, like the 5th Northumberland or the 42nd RH who ploughed their own furrow regardless, and according to 'tradition,' the 46th South Devonshire Regiment. |
dibble | 18 Oct 2020 11:46 a.m. PST |
The Cords look contemporary but that plume? Probably not. Just to add. The J.N & B Pearse chart has the 38th's lace spacing as 'R' = 'Regular' or evenly spaced. so even they may well be wrong. |

Hey dibble, have you looked into EIC/Caribbean naval/merchant uniform/dress? Bc I've been looking into a certain portrait, and found some comparisons. Anywhere else to contact you btw? |
dibble | 12 Mar 2023 11:36 a.m. PST |
I'm sorry but I don't give out my contact details lightly. It's not you, but I only contact those that I have known for some years who get to P.M me outside of forums. Perhaps you could post your findings here or open up another thread. It may well lead to an interesting debate. This thread is rather old I did a revised one which you posted on Re: Buncombe's Artillery Officer. Here's a link to the Militia and Volunteers thread TMP link |
