The whole tale of eradication of smallpox is fascinating. Like Polio, there was monent when we told, forget it, it no longer exists…except in labs, where we must keep some in case it never reappears. Which make perfect sesnse..at the time…… Blowing OBL away was worth while but was it a good idea to carry out the search using a local immunisation programme? Anyway…back to smallpox. The account cited just reflects (what should have been) widespread European practice. Jenner's vaccination had replaced the longstanding practice of inoculation (using the original… attenuated?.. virus itself)…which was very effective if it did not kill you |
